Do you mean when putting the head ON the valve? Or how would this help when removing the head?

When an extra tube in the saddle bag is a really tight fit, I like the comfort of knowing the plastic cap will prevent the thin, threaded part of the valve core from piercing the tube. Other than that, toss'm.

A friend claims that by putting the ring on the stem when changing the tube, it keeps the tube where he wants it, thus making the change easier. I have never had a need to do this.

Like a vestigial organ from an evolutionary dead end, these small nuts serve as a reminder of what we once were, even if they have been made redundant for our needs today. We should take a moment to appreciate through this nut how far we have come even if they will not continue on the journey with us, as they are discarded like so much common refuse.

I use them for bottle cage spacers.

In a pinch you can cut the tip of the black cap off and it works as a one time a schrader valve adapter

you can launch the caps using an old school presta pump. Like a classic Silca with a campagnolo head.

If the head is tight it “pulls” on the valve, had them rip completely off, never with the nut on

But the nut does nothing to reduce the stress on the tube. It will still get the same pull on it, with or without the nut.

Ironically, I keep them on my bikes because they prevent the valves from rattling.

Just give them a gently hand tightening once every two weeks or so, never had any come loose so much that they started to rattle.
