Going 1x?

Contemplating converting my current 2 x 11 (52/36 with 11/28) travel bike into a 1x for easier breakdown/travel.

For most of my rides I am on roads - with the occasional MUT/gravel trail - what setup (front 1x/rear 11 speed) do you recommend to match up to the above.

For reference - this bike is set up with a mish/mash of SRAM parts - currently force crank.

I might do 42 x 11-36 or 11-32 for road/light off road.

Reasonable steps and top end.

At least, similar gearing works for me! Your road gearing is reasonably steep so maybe you can get away with a tigher cassette. Shimano makes an Ultegra level 11-30 I think.

I had a gravel bike with 1X and 40 x 11-40. While it was great for gravel, the huge jumps and occasionally spinning out on long downhills I would opt for something bigger up front for road exclusively and a tighter cassette. 42 x 11-36 sounds about right for road assuming hilly terrain.

I went with an 34t oval absolute black front ring and Ultegra 11-34 cassette for my MRB. I use it on dirt/gravel as well as paved roads.

I wanted 1 to 1 for the steeper hills off road, but it does spin out easily on the downhills and even the flats if I really push it. It does give me a tighter gear range in the back without the large jumps I had when running a 40t up front and 11-40 in the rear though.

Just out of curiosity, why is a 1X easier to breakdown for travel? Does your travel case require you to remove the front derailleur?

R7000 also has an 11-30 option. Needs the medium cage RD though. That's what I'm using on road only with a 53/39.

The 6800 rear will do 30t just fine w/o going to the mid-cage derailleur.

Depending on the bike, it'll acceptably shift a 32t big cog.

1x...

Re: question on ease of breakdown...always looking for something easier/quicker for breakdown/buildup. My thinking here is to find a rear etap and have one less thing to worry about! I appreciate all the feedback on the ideal 11 speed setup. I'll let you know how it goes.

try this

3T has these

Cog: BAILOUT CASSETTE 9-10-11-12-13-15-17-19-22-26-32
OVERDRIVE CASSETTE 9-11-12-13-15-17-19-22-25-28-32

opt with a 44T or 50T on the front and you should be covered!

50 x 9? Is this a time trial bike? No on needs that much top end.

Haha. I can't imagine pedaling with resistance at 50mph.

A 9 tooth sprocket is how Dave Stoler was able to draft the Cinzano truck in the little chainring.

I doubt you'd need anything bigger than a 32 tooth on the rear, TBH you could probably use your existing cassette. 52/13 is the same as 44/11, 44/32 is the same as 36/26.
