center lock rotor tool question

I went to remove the centerlock rotor today from a white industries CLD rear hub. My ancient Park FR-5 cassette lockring tool didn't have enough internal clearance for the end cap. I see they now have a FR-5.2 tool. Will this work or do I need the 3 times as expensive TL-LR10 lock ring tool?

I've found the same clearance issues, especially with tapered end caps that go from the larger 15mm down to 12mm. This has only been an issue on the front wheels for myself.

The splines from the removal tool can't get far enough into the lockring to get a good bite for tightening or removing.

I've found the easiest solution is to go with this style that uses the BB interface. No clearance issues.

I wish I had that interface. Unfortunately I need to get the existing rotor off that has the internal splines first.

I had the same issues with an older Shimano lockring tool. It was deep enough for a front 100x12 centerlock rotor lockring, but not a rear 142x12 centerlock rotor lockring. So I got a Part Tool FR-5.2, which works fine with both front and rear rotor lockrings. (Note: the FR-5.2 is less expensive, at a retail price of $8.95, than the Park TL-LR10, but does not have the 1/2" drive socket).

A word of caution about the Wolf Tooth lockring, and other lockrings that use and external tool: Some forks do not have enough clearance for the outer lip of these lockrings, and can only work with the thinner lockrings which use an internal spline tool. (I learned this the hard way.)

Thank you. Good info about the outer spline lock ring as well. I'll stop by the local bike shop today and see if they have an FR-5.2 in stock. If not, Amazon will send me one.

In a pinch I have used a FSA bottom bracket tool to remove a centerlock ring. If you have one of those laying around it should work.

I ran across this earlier, Park updated their BB tool to have deeper recesses for hub end caps.
