I've been hurt way more often riding my mountain bike than my road bike. The mountain bike has always been my fault, but nothing worse than some bruises and scrapes. The one time I've been hurt on the road was not my fault, and involved an ambulance ride and a few weeks off work.

Yes, bumps, bruises and even broken bones happens on dirt/gravel, it comes with the territory, but it all heals. Getting flattened by a vehicle may be the end of cycling and more.

All true and probably less traffic but 'most' GRoad riding is on a dirt road..not some smoothish, 1 rut, single-type track dirt path....I certainly wouldn't want to go toe to toe with this.
