Shimano RX8 Gravel Shoes

Just picked up a pair from my LBS in 45 Wide. Won’t have a chance to test them out until the new frame arrives.

FYI: Shimano rep said these were lighter than the S-Phyre XC901.

I think that’s what I’ve read online too

I was recently interested in using a walkable cycling shoe for sportif and commuting duties, but was not enamored by the selection of heavy, lugged MTB shoes. The RX8 caught my eye and I ordered a pair from Bike Tires Direct. Cleats have not been mounted, but here are my initial impressions.

They are wicked light. They have a full carbon sole, and minimal rubber tread lugs. I didn't expect the carbon sole to be as stiff as it is, but prefer this for endurance riding. Walking around the house feels similar to walking in a carbon road shoe, but with better traction grip.

They run small. I am a 12.5 shoe size and normally wear a Sidi 47, Fizik 46.5, and the RX8s are a whopping 48. I tried a size 47 and they were too small. The current Shimano sizing chart is a correct guide.

They also are low volume. I have a narrow, low volume foot, and the RX8s envelop them comfortably. They have a wrap-around upper that may accommodate a higher volume, wider foot well, but I can't definitively claim that they will work.

I think that there is an emerging market for lightweight, walkable, high-performance shoes for randonnee, touring, sportif cycling that heavy MTB shoes don't satisfy. This new Shimano shoe may be the catalyst that opens up the market. I hope so.

I will try to remember to check back in once I have some kilometers on them.

Is there something that prevents you from riding with them on a different bike?

My other bike is a road bike with power pedals, not going to change it up just to try them out

I was too looking for a pair of everyday shoes and ordered both Shimano RX8 and XC9, with the intention of keeping one of them.

RX8 is definitely the more pared down of the two. Single BOA, minimal tread, less material overall and as a result significantly lighter. XC9 on the other hand feels almost maximalist and has a considerably more premium feel. They have similar fit. For reference I’m 46 in both and 45.5 in my s-works 6 road shoes.

I’m going to keep the XC9, however. I like the double BOA configuration much better than the single BOA plus velcro on the RX8. I have low volume feet and feel I can reduce the front end volume much more effectively with the front BOA while keeping the rear one relatively loose. XC9 is also more walkable due to the softer tread.

For someone looking for minimalist SPD shoes and doesn’t mind the single BOA, RX8 is an excellent choice.

I am incredibly happy with my RC7s. I think Shimano is really stepping up their game in the shoe department.

Yeah, a lot of the Shimano line is looking as nice or nicer than the Giro alternatives

Nice, I would like to get the same, but would really like to try them on first.
Have XC9's in 48 which are too snug/short on hot days, and have pair of m162 or something # in 49 and they are way too big.

Those are looking nice!

I have been a strictly shimano shoe guy for a while and love the wider toe box compared to most brands. My only complaint is that they don't seem quite as durable as some other brands I have tried.

The silver is incredible to look at in person. In case anyone is wondering what the size 42 weighs:
