Amazing story. I'm also struck by how much this dude reminds me of pretty much every other dude I hang out with - 30's-40's, fit, outdoorsy, pretty chill - but it's impossible for me to put myself in his shoes.
Says he didn't really want to come forward because he didn't think he could live up to the Chuck Norris image he'd be stuck with. Sounds like a guy I'd hang with.
People do what they have to do. Sometimes it's picking a car up off of a baby, sometimes it's calmly instructing your elderly wife to drive a Bic pen into the eye of the mountain lion that's chewing on your head.

If the cougar that attacked him only weighed 35-40lbs it was too young to be on its own. Something must have happened to its mother or she was hunting elsewhere.

Interesting detail: he thinks not wearing earbuds saved his life, enabling him to hear the cat sooner. When I ride, my ears really seem like a safety device.

It's interesting that some other animal had decided to eat the dead mountain lion by the time the rangers got there.

That guy's lucky to be alive. If he hadn't turned around, he might not be.
