Campagnolo 10 speed compact chainrings (square taper Centaur)

Some general questions on campagnolo 10 speed compact chainrings for a Centaur square taper.

Are all Campy 10 speed compact chainrings the exact same bolt pattern

Any advantage to the AFT chainrings?

Do I need to find ones that have ud and eps?

Does it make sense to use TA or some other brand will shifting suffer?

Do I need to replace chain ring bolts at the same time?

Do 11 speed chainrings work or will shifting degrade?

Thanks

1)..no..any compact that has a hidden 5th arm, behind the crank arm..THAT bolt diameter is 110/112mm..Any aluminum Campag compact with all 5 arms showing..THAT is a standard 110mm.

2)More durable surface

3)No

4)TA makes great CRs

5)No

6)11s rings will work fine but some small rings are the type where the CR bolt screws into the small ring(it's threaded)

Thanks OP

This one the bolt is not behind the arm

So that means I have to make sure that it is not for the other bolt pattern

I assume that rules out any of the 11 speed ones

Been having issue with shifting where when going from big ring to small ring drops between intermittently

Big ring has some wear rear derailleur needs new pulleys

So figure time for a drive train refresh

consider yourself lucky if you have one of the alloy compact cranks that uses "regular" 110 bcd rings. sounds like you do.

get yourself a set of praxis compact rings and your drivetrain will shift better than new. praxis rings are excellent!

Yup, just a normal 110mm BCD
Yup again, all the 11s ones, even the aluminum ones, are 110/112mm BCD.
Make the front der more 'aggressive'..a little tail out, maybe a little higher.

I have a beautiful shiny set of ten speed Centaur 34/48 rings for sale which came off a square taper carbon crank, but I believe they only fit on a square taper carbon crank.

For the record... once i got a set of compact chainrings and the diameter of the bolt was smaller than what I needed, not the threaded version... dont ask, still dont know what year were those chainrings...

What you do is to just put the chainring in a vertical drill so the hole is in the right place.. since I had only english drill bits the holes needed to be finished like 30 seconds each with a rounded file...

Aesthetics question first praxis on a silver crank vs TA silver

Are the praxis going to be noticeably superior to the TA or original campagnolo

Hard to quantify..Praxis CRs are really nice and not very cheap..I'd say TA, great rings and not a ton of $..It depends on the ratios/teeth you want also. Campag are 50/34 and some 36(rare). TA is anything.

You need to be careful about the ring spacings.
Campag manage ring spacing in many cases on the ring itself - the tabs are often the same thickness but where on the gauge of the ring the teeth are milled, sets the spacing.
There's also the question of how physically thick the rings are, less of a problem when you have all 5 bolts visible, but still relevant as the thickness of the ring will also potentially affect the ring spacing.

For reference (not relebant in the OPs case) In the case of hidden bolts, because the big ring is supported on both sides, if the ring is too thick or too thin for the crank design, you get a "kink" behind the crank - can cause chain drop.

It's not unusual to get the "chain rides the teeth of the inner ring" problem where you have a mismatch of chain, FD and ring spacings / set-up issues because the FD and LH shifter don't match to the ring spacing.

It's much more commonly a problem running 9 and 10s on 8s rings which wouldn't apply in this case (compact being a more modern innovation than most 8s chainrings allow for - and there were no Campag 8s rings in compact sizes) but we do see it from time to time with mix'n'match set-ups. Sometimes OK in the stand but once tension is on the chain, it happens on the road. It was a bit of a curse back in 2004-06 with the old "Compact" type FDs, mostly cured when they were replaced with QS in 2007.
