Today, and almost everyday. '91 VW GTi 16v, '93 Nissan pickup, '02 Mazda Protege. Two of my three daughters have sticks...both of them are VW Jetta's, and my wife has no problem with a manual transmission.
I have never had a car that was considered "mine" that wasn't a manual transmission...and I've been driving since the late '70's. Our family has only owned three vehicles with automatics, and our current one is a '19 Forester. Last edited by Keith A; 09-17-2021 at 02:22 PM. |

Yesterday. But only because I haven’t driven today. Haven’t owned an automatic since my first car, which I sold in 1981. The streak might end with the next one.

I still have an '87 GTI 16v (that's in need of some love) and a garage full of spares. I started racing them, for a few years, when I stopped racing bikes. Bikes are so much easier!

I had only manual transmission cars & motorcycles from 1999 when I bought my first car (I never had a car till after I got out of college) till 2012.
Since then I've had a Subaru Outback, traffic had gotten so bad that the manual wasn't super fun, and the Outback manual is/was supposedly not very good. I haven't missed it that much, cause my car is not an engaging car anyway. I do REALLY hate automatics, but my Subaru is a CVT, which I find much less annoying. It's not about how fast a transmission is or is not but more that the CVT never acts like an idiot, and I find regular automatics regularly act like an idiot. I have zero interest in ever buying another internal combustion engine vehicle so it's highly unlikely I'll be driving anything with a manual transmission again. I know a couple people who have a car with a manual transmission still but for the most part most people I knew had gotten rid of them long before I did. Even if we weren't going away from internal combustion engines there are additional modern things that are more easily controlled with automatic transmission engines. Fuel economy & emissions are more easily controlled when the computer has taken over what happens during and around a shift. On some cars the behavior of the manual has gotten annoying in recent years as the computer tried to maintain fuel economy/emissions across the driver's shift. |
