Arrow SOMEC Frame Identification (rare Martini Paintjob)

Hi folks,

Yet again I turn to the collective knowledge of this forum in hopes of a frame / tubeset identification on this beautiful Somec bike :-)

The bike in question is a Somec equipped with a complete Shimano 600EX (6200) groupset (1986 - 1987).

I was unable to figure out what Somec model this could be and what tubeset it was built with. It has a lot of beautifully pantographed parts as-well.

Hope someone with keen knowledge on Somec bikes might be able to recognise this bike :-)

Any info is much appreciated :-)

If you have the serial #s, may be just contact "Societa' Mecchanica" (Somec) and see what information they have on the frameset?!

Alternatively, they do have vintage catalogs online, maybe sit down and see what you can find:

Remove the BB and stick your finger inside. If you can feel the ribs inside the bottom ends of the down tube or seat tube, you'll know it's at least Columbus SL/SP. You can visually check the underside of the fork crown for the helical ribs in the steerer as well.

That will at least give you a minimum tubing quality.

Gorgeous paint job, by the way.

Yes SLX had spiral ribs. SL and SP did not.

Thanks for the numerous replies :-)


I tried to find a serial number on the frame, there seems to be none.

Next step will be to remove the BB and look for the spirals. I will keep you guys updated... :-)

Try removing the fork to see if there are any markings on the steerer tube. Sometimes builders will put a serial number on it to match the frame.

Also, look closely at the dropouts, some builders will add a number there.

A little update. I removed the BB, however the tubes are flat. So no ribs there.
So it is definitely not a SLX...

Is there any way to know if it might be an SL?

The seatpost is size 27.2mm.

I have also attached a photo of the BB. It looks kind of funky. Maybe someone can recognise it. Unfortunately I was not able to find a serial-number.

It's always fun to trace this stuff, but while your finger may detect the presence of ribs, or a scale may (or may not) be a rough indicator of overall tubing thickness, I highly doubt you'd be able to perceive any difference in ride quality between straight gauge 0.9mm 4130 at one end of the scale, and 7-5-7 or similar butted light tubing at the other end, so "in your head" the tubing can be whatever you want it "tu be". I'd keep the original finish, clean up and touch up the patina, polish up those lovely 600 parts, replace the cables, bar tape and saddle and ride it, it's a grin-producing bike!
