Here is a visual of using a dime to spread the stem. I used this before and worked.

It's kind of funny, this place is generally a little, um, enabling when it comes to expensive tools...but ask about installing bars with tight bends on a quill stem and it's coin coin coin

How do you get a quill stem on Soma Hwy One bars?
I’m installing those bars on a retro build right now…today actually.
I’m using a Deda Murex. It’s great due to the removable plate. I initially installed a longer one, reordered and now swapped it out for different size. So nice not to have to remove brake/shifter levers and tape to remove bars. I also didn’t encounter the same difficulties as you due to the removable plate. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Well, that's probably why stems with removable faceplates were invented because fishing a compact bar through a quill stem was a lot of trouble. |
