Well, I've left mine outside for a decade. I do open the top and bottom vents a bit so mold doesn't grow inside if I don't use it for a long time, but I also made the mistake of leaving the bottom vent wide open once, and a bird made a nest in there! So, moderation is the key, I suppose.

If you want to build your own someday, I highly recommend this book. You can make smokers out of cardboard, oil cans, trash cans, etc., or build a small smokehouse out of wood, brick, even a temporary one from tree branches. Pits, smokers built into a hill (fire down below, chute/chimney to take smoke up to the meat). Permanent structures, temporary rigs, etc.
