Taking a breath, Oregon wildfires close in.
Close in, as in we are SE of PDX [18 miles to downtown] and the evac zone got 5 miles from me around dinner time.
Been in a respirator when outside last two days. High winds causing a nightmare scenario. 3 mile from us some folks house and barn and entire collection of trucks, machines and the entire lot laid bare. That turned out to be a RV trailering a jeep dragging a chain or something, and not a wildfire jump. Jeep on fire when he looked in the mirror, pulled sort of to the shoulder and the wind blew the flames of the melting RV and Jeep to these poor folks digs. Anyway; Winds done, skies like Armageddon still. Car covered with ash, and barely outside the Metro area too. My CRV has 3 bikes in it, and a rack with 3 bikes on it, wife's Bernina setup, my bang bangs, ready to flee. I had to decide which bike children to leave behind, in case. But thank God no evac had to happen... Among left to burn: SL3 S-Works Tarmac, 2000 Strong, Merckx SS Corsa ala Molteni, 29er, Look 585 [wah!!!] and more... All the big money stallions on/in the CRV. That was too close!!!

Have some friends with a Blue Berry farm in Eagle Creek currently evacuated, and don't know if their place is still standing. Be careful, pictures don't look good.

My grandson is a firefighter trying to contain the Lionshead Fire. This is his dream job. Glad he's doing it and not me.

You tell us who is to die but you never tell us who is to live....focus on the positive.

I hope you got everything documented for insurance. Hopefully take a video around the house before evac.
Stay safe.

Got the evacuation order, bugged out.
Put all the other bike in the steel shop out back. Hope we don't go back to no house and a baked bunch of bikes...

Best of luck to the kid, tell him to keep his eyes open. It's really the greatest job in the world. For a youngster. Edit for everyone - as Tuxbailey mentioned above about documenting everything. Seriously, do this. Doesn't matter what part of the Country you live in, wildfires, tornadoes or even a simple fire. Just walk your house and record a phone movie hitting every wall and inside every closet. For all of us, hit the bikes and all your PARTS too. Most people when they evac will take their phones with them, so the insurance company will have someplace to start. I've seen too many people arguing with 'their' insurance companies about how many shirts and pants they used to own. Some insurance companies are much worse than others and it's impossible to tell until it's too late. And dropbox or google drive them your video, DO NOT give them your phone. Best of luck. Glad, once again we are on the sunny side of the cascades.
For those unfamiliar with Oregon, the part of the state that's on fire is the wet and rainy side. That section of the forest is very very dense and there's A LOT of fuel to burn. |
