Let's keep it on topic.

IrishGirl, feel free to PM me about the actual situation in the city if you have concerns - I won't address it in public here.

I will however post some suggestions later tonight about routes and options for rentals for all to see and discuss.

A rental near downtown waterfront may be hard to come by. River City Bicycles, Bike Gallery, and Clever Cycles all appear to not be renting at this time. (But that could be out of date, so those are three places I would recommend calling.)

Cycle Portland does say they are currently renting.
Our Road Bike fleet consists of 2019 Giant Defy and Fastroad Bikes
Lightweight Full Carbon Frame
Comfortable Endurance Geometry for long rides
Hydraulic Disc Brakes for riding in all conditions
Tubeless Tires for a hassle-free ride
12mm Thru-Axles for added stiffness and durability
Compact Crankset and 10-speed 11-34 Cassette for the steeper inclines
What's Included: Kryptonite U-Lock, Helmet, Lights

River City Bikes on Belmont appears to be renting: https://rivercitybicyclesbelmont.com/rentals/

For routes, it depends on what you are after.

The pics I posted above are from a ride out to North Plains and Forest Grove, a popular destination for getting out of the city and onto rolling farm roads - plus there is a phenomenal bakery in Forest Grove for a mid-ride snack. That ride is going to be 70+ miles though leaving from downtown and may put you in terrain you can get from home.

If you like climbing and european one-lane roads, the close-in west hills are your place. The PDX Ronde ride route is marked with yellow lions (which are faded so still do the GPS route) and even if you don't do the whole thing, which is a beast of a ride, it gives some good ideas for lightly traveled roads within a 10mi radius of the city core.

Skyline Drive heading northwest out of the west hills is a perennial favorite and is the connector for many of the best roads and climbs you can access from the city. Unfortunately due to some road work on the major arterial connecting HWY 30 and HWY 26 (Cornelius Pass Road), traffic is diverted onto Skyline, Newberry, and Rock Creek, meaning lots of grumpy drivers and too much traffic during normal hours. All is not lost though - there are some sneaky ways to get around most of it. If you want a 60mi ride with 6K ft. of climbing, I'll make the route and send you the GPS track. I'll take you through St. Johns on the return so you can get an Ocean Roll at Sparrow Bakery.

A quick closer-in option is to ride the volcanos within the city limits - go up Clinton St. to 52nd, over to Lincoln, and up to Mt. Tabor - then drop down and over to 60th and across 84 and then 82nd to Rocky Butte - once down that you can ride through Alameda and Irvington, and even continue to NW Portland up to Pittock Mansion - take the traverse over to Hewett and eventually Council Crest park - bomb down Broadway and you're back into town - wind down to the Tillicum bridge and there you have it. I call it the Four Peaks ride and have GPS track I can send of that one too. You get views of the city and the mountains from four different perspectives, a tour of the neighborhoods, and a few thousand feet of climbing, all in around 40 miles or less.

Fancy the Gorge? We have a nice 80 miler out n' back and up the tallest mountain before you get to Mt. Hood...can cut that down to 30-40ish if you take the MAX out to Gresham and start from there. Plenty of easy GPS tracks to share for that too.

Many many options, but this is getting long - and we haven't even talked food, beer, or coffee!

I had a great trip to Portland two years ago.

Unfortunately, many of the restaurants I would suggest appear to be closed due to covid.

Clean39 was a great tour guide on the one ride I did when I was there.

There is a lot of good ice cream options in the city.

If wine is your thing, the wineries in the gorge were more interesting than Willamette.

Dirties? I resemble that remark.

What's with all the Detroit pizza joints invading the city?

Because Detroit pizza is an awesome option! Especially Assembly Brewing on SE Foster. They come closest to nailing it. In fact, they nail it. Can’t replace Ken’s, Scotties, or Apizza Schoals in my heart, but it’s damn good pizza.

Gotta include a Forest Park ride in any visit here. Just did my SE/up Thurman/through Forest Park (Salzman Rd)/Skyline/down Thompson,Cornell,Lovejoy/and back home loop. It’s a wonderful ride, about two hours from my house in SE.

It’s also the ride I broke my collarbone on (S-turn on lower Lovejoy) and still not descending like I want to, but closer.

A ride out in the Gorge (Historic Hwy route) is a can’t miss option, too. Still slightly less traffic nowadays, it seems.

Being a Joisey Boy, I sure feel that way hands down.

Detroit Pizza, What in Mowtowns name is freakin detroit pizza??

A googling I go....

EDIT; I am back!

Gimme a break, Detroit Pizza! A Sicilian in a deeper pan is just that.

That is a affront to Sicilian pies every where!!!

Need to try one, but we are really thin crust folk.

OK, Rubens NY Pizza Tualatin and Gladstone Pizza on Portland Ave are my NY/NJ selfs favs.

Dan, do you recall I pointed out Portland Ave Pizza when we wheeled past it when we rode to O-City. Their home spun non GMO dough is the star of the show, and the rest of it is good too!
