It would be fun to read test drive report with the engine and suspension mods.

I have a 2006 that has VW factory lowered springs but is otherwise stock. I purchased it brand new from the dealership in the spring of 2006. 130,000 miles and going strong. Unsure about keeping or selling it to go down to one car. Articles like this make me think I should keep it.

Wow, after years of seeing slammed mk1s it’s nice to see one well built but with some intelligence in the suspension and wheels department.

YES! Now we’re talkin’! Self proclaimed GTi fanboy here. Always wanted a MKI, but never happened, well hasn’t happened to date. Owned a 87' GTi 1.8L, 98’ GTi VR6 Drivers Edition and an 03’ GTi 30th Anniversary. Dumped way too much money into them, but damn they’re fun cars. My favorit was the 30th Anniversary, and then for whatever it’s worth a 69’ BMW 2002. MIss both of those.

Loved my '83 in red. Drove to lots of races in it. With the back seat out, it could easily hold 2 bikes and lots of wheels.

I had the Jetta GLi version of that car--it was a wonderful thing! I have deep regrets that I sold it while in grad school...

Interesting article--I just saw a beater Mark 1 for sale the other day, and idly wondered about restoring it...

I've always appreciated the GTI but never thought I would own one. But last year I decided that I wanted to have a manual transmission again and bought a new Mk7.5 with the Clark plaid interior. I've had it for 18 months now and I still enjoy it each time I take it out.

Bought a brand new ‘84. Then got the mod bug - BBS wheels, Leistritz exhaust, Recaro seats, Koni Neuspeed suspension, Momo steering wheel, Euro bumpers, Nakamichi/ads audio, etc. I loved that little guy, I wish I had it back.

I went from a ‘79 Rabbit diesel (48HP) to an ‘83 GTI (90HP)...what a leap that was...awesome car for its time.

Wow that is a fantastic build. Ok, though after all that work I don't rally care for the bracket and bolts on the shift lever. Oh ya what a fun car. I liked the way I could lift the rear wheel in a tight 90 deg turn and just walk it around the turn.
Fun times.

Had a MK7 GTI with the perfomance package and loved it. Unfortunately for some reason I couldn't find a position for the seat that didn't kill my bad knees. Traded it in on the BMW 340xi M-Sport I know have.

Like you my highly modded BMW 2002Ti is one of the few cars I truly miss. Only my Miata gave me more smiles than this Bimmer.

Fun times in Germany with the 2002 and with some GTI's my friends had.
