Campy compatible vs. Campy chainring?

Pretty new to biking and I need to replace my inner chain ring.

Is getting a campy-compatible 39t chain ring worth saving $40?

I have used TA Campy chainrings for years and have been very happy with them. I can't really tell a difference.

Can't imagine you'd notice any difference, especially on a 53/39 crankset.

The big ring has more variation among manufacturers in terms of pins and ramps lo lift the chain. The inner ring is a simple affair by comparison.

Purists would go for Campy...

I have a new.... never had a chain around it.....39 tooth Campy chainring just like the one from Exel you are looking at. Believe it came off a 10 speed Chorus crank. I would sell it for less than they are asking. PM me if interested.

TA rings work great with Campy.

The benefit to a better quality ring is the better rings tend to be thicker, stiffer, and flatter/straighter. This is much more of an issue with the big ring, or bigger rings.

For a small ring, with bolt holes right near the teeth (so very little material to flex, i.e. not a lot of leverage to flex), an inexpensive ring should work fine (albeit wear just a bit quicker).

For the large ring it's incredible the difference between a lower quality ring and a higher one, even within the Campy line. The Centaur ring is probably 60% as thick as a Chorus/Record ring. The cold forged (has a purplish tinge) Chorus/Record rings are much harder, much stiffer, and shift much better when they're not brand new. You can shift under higher pedaling pressure, the shifting is more consistent as the chainring wears.

This applies to the older 5 arm solid rings. With the two piece hollow rings (Shimano, not sure of others) this no longer holds true.

Speaking of which, Praxis LevaTime II rings (aka the rings on Zayante Carbon and Zayante Carbon-S) will work fine with 12sp Chorus, right?

I am sure they will - but I just asked Praxis anyway just to see what their take was and they said they are not 12sp compatible and that the chain will not seat itself on the rings. Seems like BS to me... It's not like it's an AXS chain... Ironically they said an Eagle chain will work, which AFAIK, is very similar to a 12sp Campagnolo chain.

And rounder, not so much an issue on a road bike with a derailleur to take up chain slack, however on a single speed or track bike the least bit un-round makes a large difference in un even chain tension.

Speciality TA rings have been used for decades by normal consumers and pros in the Tour. Lance used them in fact. He and others used them because Shimano was not making rings bigger than 53th at one point and TA. So they were used on tt bikes. And they made them in blue, black, green, red and gold. A bunch of teams used them in colors to match bikes.

That said, inner rings don't matter. There is very little difference in inner rings. It's the outer that matter due to shifting ramps and pins.

In other wards, you will be just fine with this chainring. Buy away!

Yes, get an after market small ring. The big ring nor chain nor ders will care.
