In all sincerity, is “flight” the best scenario in this? I’m not a canine expert. Good to know for future reference...

Flight is only good if you can get a lead on the dogs!

I went out for a ride on Tuesday and as I was peddling uphill a large mixed breed Rott/Pit that was laying on a lawn decided he would get in the road and stand his ground.

I stopped and tried to settle him down as he was visibly upset with hair standing up and showing teeth as he paced back and forth. I stood my ground for a couple of minutes as he barked and growled. He then began to lunge at me! I was not about to get bit and had assumed at some point the owner would hear him aggressively barking at me and call him back, but that did not happen.

I waited for him to pace a little further away and I took off in the opposite direction back down hill! He didn’t give much of a chase.

On flat ground or if I had already had a good pace going I would have likely been able to outrun him. Adrenaline usually kicks in when there is a chase!

I have been chased by more than a few dogs around where I live, but if they get the drop on me then resistance futile!

Not as fancy as most of the others but my latest iteration of the old, junky Orbea Cabestany has it set up for packed gravel road riding.

Threw some knobby 700 x 32 tires on it and flat pedals with SPD clip-ons on one side.

Of course for those not knowing the lineage of this old beast. Pedro Delgado raced one of the Cabestany's to a Vuelta win in 1985 as well as a Tour de France stage win that year riding one of these. Somehow this one made it to the U.S. even though Orbea was not importing to the states back then.

Setup with 8 speed friction shifting right now but I've ran 10 speed on it with no problem. A modern RD paired with those super smooth Mavic DT's shifters work amazingly good. A rough ol' girl with a parts bin build for now.

Is this my Central-OR gravel bike? Not sure yet..

I do know that I have a 120mm stem arriving today, so the reach situation should be improved.

I also know I have a Force AXS 2x setup for it to replace the Di2 bits that are now sold.

It motors on the uphills, handles very nicely, is light and nimble, and does a pretty good job of muting the chatter.

But is this the fit I want for gravel? Or will this replace my Seven as my all-rounder, opening room for a "classic road bike"?

Time will tell.

My XD started out as an all-rounder.. 120mm MFCK stem, Darimo seat post, 2x 30mm tires and light rims. Then after a few rides on my local ridge and down some single track following guys younger and more daring then myself...

The bike now has :
  • 650B most of the time
  • dropper post
  • suspension stem (100mm)
  • 1x drive train w/dinner plate cassette

I'm headed back up next week to finish it.

My start was too late and part of the loop had a 13 mile road from hell so I decided to cancel almost the whole thing.

Looks great there! I’m about 7 hours away driving so will definitely keep this area on my radar!

Very interested to see this in AXS form, my vote is that this becomes your gravel bike and the seven makes way for a truly classic road bike.
