I have never had that happen. I'd see if the end of your tool fits through the square taper of another crank arm. Only thing I can think of is that the driving end of the tool made contact with with the crank arm instead of the spindle. Not that that is going to help - other than possibly explain what the problem was.

Didn't help that it on a (larger) JIS taper(shimano BB looks like)..yes there are thread cutters but doubt that'll work..seems a tie rod tool, might kill the BB cup also..hopefully the DS comes off...

Wonder if the OP, when first using the tool with the ring on it..pulled the threads out then..

Kinda like forgetting to take the crank bolt washer out first..and the 'puller' pushes against that instead of the spindle end.

I was gonna say....make sure the washer is out. But didn't see one there.
