Quiet campy freehubs after overhaul..
So I finally decided to pack some new grease into my 9/10/11 spd campy hubs (two sets). After much back and forth, I decided to go with some good ol 10W-30; a 1-2 drops on each pawl. Now that its all back together, they arent as loud as they were before. Is that because they were so dry prior?
bonus question: do people still grease their skewers? long unthreaded part. Also, man these more modern hubs are SO much better than the old cone-style hubs. Ive been putting off maintenance on these for so long because i used to hate doing this on old 6-7-8 speed wheels; was always worried i wouldnt be able to get it back together or adjusted right. These things are a breeeze! |

If not, you’ll probably notice an increase in volume after about 100 miles. |

yeah, when I greased my campy hubs they were quite for a few miles and then the glorious sound returned.
I do grease the long unthread part of my skewers. I am not really sure why... I think I saw a buddy do it and have done it since then. |

Oil on QR mechanism, grease on threads. Yup..if you ever need freehub body bearings or cones, I have them, BTW-

Another question only probably you can answer One set of hubs had generic skewers on them. Can I use the old style campy skewers from 6/7 speed era or are they too short? They seem to work ok; currently mounted on the bike but im not sure how much of it is threaded in compared to a full length skewer.

Lower FHB bearing goes south way less frequently that the upper one. Quote:

yea, the most modern campy hubs with the adjusting collar are some of the nicest to work on. the good news is that, as long as you keep the grease reasonably fresh and clean, they can literally last forever.
loud pawl freeehubs generally mean they are too dry. that "dampened" sound means the pawls are riding on a little lubrication film, as they should be, instead of dry metal to metal contact.

If the wheels are going to see any amount of water if is a good idea for corrosion protection.

BUT all bearings for all hubs and wheels that use an aluminum axle are the same( as are yours above). The cart bearings in the hubs with steel or titanium axles, are different including older 9/10/11/12s hubs that use a 12mm steel axle(lower end Fulcrum and Campag wheels, older Centaur 9s/10s/11s/12s hubs) or 1998 and older, hubs even tho they were 9s in 1997..
