Show me your travel bikes....inspire me!

We've got the very excellent gravel bike thread, how about a travel bike thread?

i just got done logging another pile of miles on my old Serotta TG. This thing has a ton of battle scars from my DIY "utility" paint after couplers were installed and the TSA who have pulled the case apart a few times already.

the current setup is 9-sp friction shift DT shifters. the old [broken] centaur-10 levers still in place for brake duty only. one of these days i have to pull them off the bars and gut them.

other build details of this true utilitarian franken-build:

-VO downtube shifters, friction
-Mavic SSC brakes
-older gen ksyrium wheels, chosen for their robustness and low spoke count to ease packing concerns
-alloy rival crank with praxis rings.

Our matching lobster s and s bikes.. also a breakaway that has flat bars on it now. I also have a road breakaway that I need to pull out, take pics and post for sale one of these days. I have bikes everywhere I travel regularly now, so no need to pack bikes anymore.

These are the very first pair of "travel"-specific bikes I owned. Sold the tikit (blue) several years ago, still have the Air Friday (red) that is packed up in a case, haven't ridden it for years.

that zank seems to have been floating around the used market for a long long time. the geometry is a bit difficult to understand. the TT measurement and the headtube length do not seem compatible?

That was the "hers" of a his-and-hers pair of travel bikes. Here is the original f/s thread:

Thanks for the info guys--I wasn't looking at Paceline that far back. Still, looks like a great deal for someone shorter than me, who wants a fairly upright position... And I love that color. Sorry to derail the thread...

My most traveled bike...

...doesn't have splitters, but goes around the country just fine in an EVOC bag:

Few changes since this picture: now with Deore derailleurs and an 11-34 cassette. This is the bike you take when you're not sure exactly what you're getting into!

nice.

agree that the beauty of downtube shifters is the range of possibilities for gearing are great.

A not-quite-matched pair of Carl Strong coupled road bikes, built for me & the missus in 2010. TIG-welded steel with carbon forks (hers is an Easton, mine is an ENVE), DT Swiss wheels, Shimano Ultegra drivetrains (hers is Di2, mine is 6700...though probably being upgraded to SRAM eTap shortly), 50/34 compact cranks with 11-28 cassettes.

They definitely take a beating in the case even when covered with the frame protector sleeves...and American Airlines has completely destroyed a pair of the S&S hard cases, which involved some collateral damage on the wheels and paint.

If I had to do it again I'd spring for unpainted Ti, go with eTap from the get-go*, and maybe choose an off-the-shelf, low-spokecount wheel.

But these are still 100% badass bikes. Unbelievably comfortable, responsive, and fast.

*edit: See post #28
