700x30 skinwall tires
I have some riding I want to do on my vintage bike this year that may include some rough road and dirt sections and I'm going to do some experimenting with how much rubber I can shoehorn into the frame and fork.
I am wondering if people have real world experience with how the tires below compare to each other with regard to width and height because we all know that there is [sometime significant] variation in actual tire size vs nominal listed size. I know wider rims are common now, but in keeping with the vintage theme, the rims i will be using are classic silver velocity aeroheads, which are a hair under 20mm outside width, so quite narrow compared to more common rims offered today, but regardless of that, experience with how tires compare will be valuable to me i think. these are the ones i've found in nominal 700x30 and tanwall: -Goodyear Eagle F1 Tanwall -Challenge Strada Pro -Specialized Roubaix Pro Tanwall -Grand Bois -Schwalbe Pro One Tanwall -WTB Exposure Tanwall -Ritchey Alpine JB Others? Thoughts?

Vittoria Corsa Control's would be my choice having been a long time Challenge Strada Bianca 30c user.
Measure closer to real size, versus the Challenge which tend to measure a bit large.. |

Grand Bois Cypres is my favorite tire, best performance/cost I've found. They do measure ~32.5 on Belgiums, up to ~33.5 on Belgium +, however. This is after years of use as they are 1-1.5mm less out of the bag. Wonderful tire though, very durable (for me) and long lasting. I believe Rene Herse Stampede Pass are a tiny bit smaller.
Grand Bois Cerf 28s are small, 28 wide x, like, 25 tall. My Schwalbe Pro One 30s were 31 when initially mounted on Belgiums, but haven't measured them since. How about Vittoria Corsa? My 28 G2s are a true 30mm on Belgium +, but they don't have the rep for being particularly durable. Last edited by donevwil; 12-08-2021 at 04:19 PM. |

The spesh roubaix 30/32 tires grow quite a bit on wide rims, they have a lot of volume. They’re heavy and ride like it.
I ran Vittoria Corsa Control 30s for a big chunk of this year on c17 Zondas, came out just a hair under 30mm. Those would be my recommendation |

Don't discount Panaracer Gravelking file tread - for me, the best price:suppleness ratio. I also like Soma supple vitesse but I'm not sure if you can get them currently in tanwall 30. Or if you ever could get them in that configuration.

Thanks guys, this is helpful.
Just dug out the old school cool wheelset i had in mind for these too. Old WI hubs were pretty cool.

I ran the Ritchey Alpine JB last season as my winter tires. Trying 30mm HT Schwalbe G-Zero tubulars for this winter.. They weigh less than the JBs with latex on carbon rims also lighter than the Archetypes, Yada. So spin up snappier noticeably.
H+ Sons Archetype rims are 622x17.5C width. Used challenge latex tubes @ 75/80 PSi. I hit a section on the Sacramento River trail as I passed the Keswick dam heading north to the Shasta dam. Trail was covered like I have never seen with flint shards from the water running across leaving a blanket of shards. I thought there is no way I am not getting flats here. Not only did I not, but my attempts to find and remove any shards... well the tire did not pick any up to my surprise. So good rating from me. Anyway, Tire mounted a year ago are 30.7x30.7mm aired up on those rims. They are the WCS Stronghold casing version, not tubeless... IIRC, they weighed in @ 345 grams when I got them.

You've had Vittoria 30c Corsa Controls, no? Are they no longer adequate?
How about Pasela PT? |

Not available in a nominal 30mm width, but the 32s might be in the ballpark on old narrow rims.

I mounted these 700x35s to a set of old Super Champion Gentleman rims (20mm outside width) and rode them hard, including this year’s Cino with no problems. Great on rough and steep dirt but still feel (and are) fast and smooth on pavement. There are 700x28 and 700x32 models as well. Love ‘em and highly recommend.
