A buddy of mine was just telling me about this. He's got a bottle he's saving for "spring"... but lucky me, I get to help him with it. I'm a sucker for anything with maple syrup in it.

Thanks! Its made of burl wood, which to my understanding is a malformation of some sort in a tree or root. It grows in strange patterns and shapes and so it makes for an interesting medium to work with. My GF is obsessed with this kinda stuff. We have it all over the house!

Glad somebody said it. I have tried many of the beers mentioned, either a type or actual, lots of small brewery beers, IPA, Belgium dark, Guiness in Europe..and gotta say, none of them appeal to me. Dark, sweet, maple syrup, chocolate, wheat, heavy, hoppy, no thanks.

Pilsner, euro or US, Dutch, German, Chec, US..not expensive. I am a plebeian
when it comes to beer.

Has anyone made hard cider? I'm thinking of brewing my first batch.

As I mentioned in an earlier post I've been drinking some Mammoth Brewing stuff lately, as I was just up there (and stocked up). Well last night I had their Devils Post Seasonal Double Pale Ale... Good stuff! Nice and hoppy yet fairly smooth. Highly recommended!

What I won't be drinking

This was included in a Christmas package from a friend who is the purchasing agent for one of the largest liquor stores in the state. Since we don't have any teenagers in the house it's taking up space in the refrigerator. It's pretty disgusting but probably better than the canned Haggis we abandoned on his porch.

Usually one or two of these will set things right. Best when starting into a fire, while sitting in a leather chair, thinking deep thoughts.

A friend and neighbor of ours makes hard cider. They use, I believe, a champagne yeast. They start with cider they press themselves from locally grown apples. Probably a mix of northern varieties. I also recall them saying they have occasionally added raisins to increase the sugar level if the specific gravity levels are too low. Not sure how much brewing experience you have, but two important aspects are cleanliness and patience.
The resulting product is a relatively dry and delicious beverage that has no resemblance to the Mike's crap you might see at your market.
Good luck.

I don't mind cheap beer either. Pabst Blue Ribbon is my favourite cheap beer. I do love the Belgian beer though. Best band for the buck at my local package store is Leffe blonde.

I've cut most alcohol out of my diet though. Trying to loose ten pounds to get back to race weight. If only I could stop going to the local bakery.

ofcounsel, that's one of my favorites. Love, love, love Rochefort 10. And the other trappists, too.

I'm on a quest to find something similar, but domestic (cheaper, less environmental impact), but I like supporting the monks.

This morning I'm drinking some loose lease Earl Grey. Pinch some leaves in a mug, pour some hot water over it and sip. A few tea leaves in the mouth never hurt any body and when I'm at work this is a lot simpler.

Try and keep a growler of Dale Bros. Brewery Runway I.P.A. around at all times, but was pleasantly surprised by Port Brewings' Wipe-Out IPA. An excellent post-ride recovery beverage.
