Way OT: Cruising the Cut

So this will really be directed more to folks in the UK or who spend time there...What's the deal with Narrow boats? Is this a popular thing or is it just a small subculture?

During my Erg sessions I usually put something on to watch and lately I've come across a video blog on YT called "Cruising The Cut" which is all about Narrow Boats and the extensive canal system (2,200+ miles) in the UK. I've become a bit fascinated with the whole culture that surrounds it. The different types of Narrow Boats as well as the people who vacation on the canals and those who live on the canals permanently and constantly travel around.

I'm interested in this too. I've been considering chartering a barge in the south of France as our next vacation. It seems like it would be an amazing way to see the countryside (and provide ample cycling opportunities )

My thought as well. It would be a great way to travel through the countryside and you could take Mtb/Cross/Gravel bikes with you to get rides in different areas.

Not OT at all.

In 2009 Rustychisel and I (and our respective partners) spent a wonderful week cruising on the Canal du Midi in the south of France. We had our bikes and did some, probably not enough, riding. It didn't matter though because just being on the canal so beautiful and such fun. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

You should start watching Rosie and Jim if you're into narrowboats.

The tours of Narrowboats for sale is interesting. Like Tiny Homes I like seeing how some maximize space with great design.

three couples I know rented a canal boat in France and loved it. The canals were quite curvy so many times as they neared a village one person would get off with one of the bicycles that came with the boat, rode into town, bought food/wine for the next few meals and caught up to the boat on the other side of town. They are casual cyclists but found the bikes very convenient and fun for shopping and sight-seeing.

For those that have done it, what rental company did you use?

I have a former boss who owns a canal boat (he bought it and moved his family on it for two years of cruising in Europe, complete with mini cooper on the deck), he recommended locoboat for bareboat (or self-drive as they apparently call it). I'd be interested in others rental experiences.

You ride your bike on vacation; they take a canal boat vacation.
Saw them when I was in England. Pretty neat.
Had a dinner cruise on one. Looked out the window, and the canal crossed a big valley on a "bridge". Crazy.
