left turner got me

I was about halfway thru my 2hr ride when one of em got me.

Fairly wide suburban neighborhood with no obstructed sight distances

Had just enough time to realize 'this is going to hurt' when it started hurting

Hit either right before or right after his right front wheel and probably hit my back on the windscreen then the pavement. I was doing 18-20 he was likely doing 25-30.

As I sat there in the street wheezing, trying to catch my breath, the ambulance then the cops showed up. Must've been a slow Saturday cause there were 2 cop cars... I created quite the scene: traffic stopping, cops, ambulance, drivers that hopefully saw the whole thing (cause I only saw fender, hood, sky, pavement)

Blunt force trauma hurts. Cars hurt. Pavement hurts. *I* hurt

Not recommended as an experience

M

Godspeed in your recovery. I'm glad that you made it.

Not to be dramatic, but I'd delete the details out of this.

From someone also on the sidelines because of a crash (thankfully no cars involved, avoiding action on a sandy path followed by a sudden grip loss and next thing I'm sliding on the pavement, just a sprained elbow) I wish you a speedy recovery. It hurts bad enough without being hut by a car and I hope I'll never find out what the difference is.
What's your prognosis, nothing broken I hope!

Lawyer and Police report

Your next steps are:
1.) Find and start talking to an accident attorney.
2.) Get police report. You may be surprised what others take on the accident is despite what you describe as a "car made a left turn into me".
3.) Depending on your injuries and police report. Decide if you want to take this on by yourself or hire said attorney.
4.) Get out your note pad. Keep track of everything. Injuries, costs, medical, time invested, time off work, etc.
5.) Do not have unprepared conversations with the drivers insurance company. Make sure everything that you say or write is consistent. The drivers insurance is "loss prevention" not "customer service".

Down the road- Get your bike evaluated and get cost for full replacement for everything. Bike, shoes, kit, etc..
In most folks opinions, any carbon part that has had a severe impact is not safe for riding.

Same thing happened to me in ‘07. I knew there might be a problem when I saw a license plate about 6” from my left crankarm.

Above information good.
Police reports are often wrong, plus they have their own lingo (in Illinois, a cyclist is a pedestrian).
Get a weather report to prove visibility wasn’t an issue. Take pictures of the accident scene, preferable soon and with same light conditions.
If you’re an hourly worker and benefits are based on hours worked, figure in future losses in pension, etc.
Turn this in immediately to your auto insurance. My guy’s insurer (Allstate) drug it out for three years. My insurer (State Farm) picked up replacement bike cost and medical bills. Needless to say, SF got reimbursed.
Above all, make sure you’re OK.

Also- get definitive and on going medical care. Sometimes things seem ok, then they are not.

Heal well brother! Exact same thing happened to me last fall - left hooked by a cargo van.

Hospital stay followed by 6 weeks in walker, et, etc.

Heed this rule: DO NOT TRY TO REPRESENT YOURSELF. GET AN ATTORNEY EXPERIENCED IN BIKE ACCIDENTS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If in doubt, re-read the last...

Sorry to shout, but I would have left $$$$$$$$$ on the table if I would have tried to settle on my own. There are more tricks to this than you can imagine. As it was, I am healed (mostly) and can afford many new bikes. Nuff said.

Take it slow

many times the full extent of injury isn't apparent until 24-48 hours after a hard hit. You may wake up tomorrow worse than today. So glad it wasn't worse
