Campagnolo SR11 for Gravel? Help me decide
Hey Paceline,
I have an Ibis Hakka MX on order but haven't settled on a groupset yet. My choices are between what I have on hand and what's in market. I have an almost complete SR11 groupset (would need calipers and a 1x chainring) or I could just go something like SRAM Force 1x. Thoughts? |

those haka MXs are rad, into them.
Just use what you have, SR works fine on gravel but if you gonna do the 1x then get the midcage RD and a bigger shimano cassette. I have used the midcage with a 32 but it can go up more, can it handle a 40t? hmmm not sure about that, maybe. However, I would go hydro on that bike, be it campy or shimano or sram. |

Good to know about Campy + TRP, thanks. The Hakka MX is 2x compatible by way of a band clamp mount FD. I would run it 1x. The ideal setup for this would be 8070 Di2 right shifter with a XTR rear mech and using the left to control a dropper. This may be the way I go in the end but I would prefer to use what I have first until I’m sure I like the frame and then upgrade in the future. BB7s work much better with Campy than TRP

agreed, bb7s work great but not as nice to setup as TRP. That said I always find them to be more powerful (probably because TRP doesnt play that well with campy).
Oh forgot to mention, you could also try the yokozuna motoko. Reporte to work very well with campy, similar to the hy/rd (but they don't self adjust). They are made by juin, so you could always get the juin version which are cheaper. |

I had campy/hy rd on my gravel bike for a bit. It was only ever okay. Never felt that awesome. I was running 2x med cage with 12-32 on the back and 36-50 on the front. When stuff gets steep and loose (15%+) it means hike a biking, whereas with a 40-42 or 38-42, you can get up a lot of that stuff much more easily. Not sure if there's much that's so pitchy out east where you are though.
I haven't kept up with campy cage capacities, but can a 1x setup handle 11-42 or 11-36, or better yet a 10-42? I ended up swapping it for a 1x di2 setup on a 10-42 which is KILLER and I will never go back to campy for off road. |

could always get that wolftooth thing that makes RDs work with big cassettes. I imagine that with a mid cage would probably be fine with a 10-42 |

Seems like overkill. I wonder how the ceramic bearing would fare in wet/muddy weather over time?
