Dura Ace 9000 11 - RD
Shimano lists the DA-9000 Short Cage RD - as 28T max on the rear. Can you safely go up to a 30 or even better a 32 tooth with a longer chain?
50/34 in the front. If not can I run a Ultegra 8000 medium RD - with the DA 9000 levers.....I assume all Shimano 11spd works nicely together but what do I know. Thanks |

I have done this but you must be very careful to not cross-chain the big-big combo. This is a short cage derailleur and won’t handle it. Also, the chain might be a bit loose in the small-small range. Otherwise it works fine. Just be careful to avoid that 50x32 combo.

Almost certain to work with a 14t difference on the front; slightly dicier for a 16t difference. 50x32t and 52x32t (when running 52/36 front) are the situations to avoid. |

I routinely run DA9000 with 32 or even 34t cassettes. Definitely be careful to cut the chain on the long side and wind in the B-tension screw as far as needed to keep the upper jockey wheel off the 34t. A bit of droop in the "small-small" is fine (and much better than not enough chain to get up to the "big-big").

i have run equivalent ultegra short cage with 32, but its going to work better with medium cage. I would step down to ultegra and get a medium personally. get full range of gears and derailleur that can take up slack effectively.

It depends on your frame, some are more possible than others, and no easy way to be sure without just installing and trying.
But I have run DA 9000 RD with and 11-30 cassette for a trip, without any problems. You will probably have to tighten the B-tension more, and might need a longer chain. Shimano is famously conservative with capacity ratings, chances are good it will work for you. |

you can maybe do it, as others above have mentioned, but a short cage derailleur will not effectively take up slack in chain like a midcage will. it's a compromise.
