Mr Man on a Mission
Had the good fortune to cross paths with an absolutely terrific young man yesterday - Tighe who is 17 years old and on day 66 of a self-supported ride from Portland Oregon to Portland Maine. This day found him in the Mahoosuc Mountains of Maine, six days from his planned final destination in Portland.
Portland is only 75 miles away ... six days to ride 75 miles? Nope. He's headed to the most eastern point of the USA - Lubec Maine - before he turns south toward Portland. Tighe is no stranger to marathon rides. He rode from Portland, OR to San Francisco as a practice ride for this adventure. Teghe's mother has chronicled every day of his ride. Want to meet an amazing 17 year old? http://mrmanonamission.blogspot.com |

Very cool.
We did not go as far, but did a Vancouver BC to San Francisco trip at the end of the summer of 1969, just before I started my final year of high school. I still have great memories from that trip. A good friend finished high school, and took his bike to France for the summer--very brave for a non-native speaker I thought. Came back with pretty decent French. Here's to more adventures! |

To youth tours. I wouldn’t have confidence that most high schoolers I know have the self-awareness and maturity to sustain themselves over a 30-60 day self-supported tour. Big leap of faith/trust by parents as well.
