Currently riding:

RSD Big Chief 29+ (hard tail trail bike)
Velo Orange Piolet (townie)
616 Fabrications Fat Bike (fun bike

All 3 are steel and are among a long, long line of steel bikes that I've had over the years. I've owned 1 or 2 aluminum bikes, never a carbon or ti. I don't care much about the weight penalty of steel as I'm not too svelte - I most enjoy the classic ride and looks of steel.

i think if it weren't for steel, i'd be missing a good chunk of my face right now.
pilot error/stupidity. all things considered, the bike handled it beautifully (and held up for 20+ miles to get me home).

i'm an n=1 guy, so i'll be replacing this guy asap with another steel bike. https://allcitycycles.com/bikes/mr_p...th_anniversary

I assume that you were airborne? That makes me cringe just a bit.

Glad you are OK.

But, that is one serious wrinkle. What are you planning to get for your next n=1?

thanks... and honestly, i'll probably just get another mr pink. before i went and folded it, it was really a great bike. i rode it through busy city streets, bike paths, huge colorado mountain climbs, gravel, and (occasionally/slowly) actual singletrack. it's a super versatile bike, and prior to this morning, never gave me a lick of trouble. it's not that light, but it was comfortable all the time. high-end enough that i could make a run at some PRs on a ride, but low-end enough that i could feel comfortable locking it up outside a brewery for a couple hours.

and the fact that the 10th anniversary edition JUST got released a day or so ago makes me think that the universe is trying to tell me something

Started out riding on roads on several iterations of steel track bikes. First real road bike was a Batavus Professional, which I traded up for a Waterford 1200 I bought used on ebay. I broke the seat tube on it at last year's D2R2. Never even noticed it until I had just finished cleaning it. Traded that for a Ritchey Road Logic, which I absolutely LOVE. I plan on repairing the Waterford some day but at the time the repair plus new paint was going to cost more than I wanted to spend on a bike with a dated drive train. PLus I wanted to new bike...

that's the crazy thing. it made a terrible sound, but i stayed completely upright -- literally, still sitting on the saddle. i had to consciously clip out and stop riding. the convenient crumple zone built into the frame absorbed a ton of energy.

my first reaction was to check the tire/wheel/fork, and when all of those were amazingly intact, i just kept riding. it was still very dark out (around 5:15am here in denver at that point), so i couldn't quite see the damage. by the time i reached the top of red rocks and the sun started to peek its way through the smoke enough for me to see what had happened, well... it was an adrenaline-fueled return trip home!

Damn! Glad you made it back safe.

The anniversary scheme is killer. Can't wait to see it!

Sounds good. Just noticed we're in the same area. In the interest of not derailing this thread, I will take it offline and ask you where you had your incident.

We might have passed each other a time or two when out riding.
