Rear cassette noise / chain
Went from: 10 speed, SRAM 11-28t road cassette, Force short cage RD, Force 22 Yaw FD, 52/36 chainrings
To: 10 speed SRAM 11-32t (XG 1099), Force Wifli RD, Force 22 Yaw FD, 50/34 chainrings. This is on a 11 speed T11 hub. I’ve doubled checked that the spacer on the FB is 1.85mm, tightened the lock ring adequately, re-did H L screw adjustments. When I do indexing, in all different gear combos, I can’t get a quiet drive train (rear) w/ all gears. That was the case when it was 11-28. I really hope I didn’t mess up my essentially new RD. I’m ignoring any minor chain rub up front. I’ll be getting a GX RD soon for another build, and I guess I can slap it on this bike to confirm. When I look from behind, the cage and jockey wheel don’t look dead on straight. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

It's been my experience over the half dozen bikes where I've used SRAM cassettes, they're inherently noisy to varying degrees.
Check your derailleur hanger for proper alignment. |

This cassette doesn’t have the the elastomer that my 11-28t had. Still, between the cogs that are quiet and the ones that are not are pretty vastly different.
I have a spare derailleur hanger, but I can’t believe they’re that fragile, the bike has never even fallen or leaned on the drive side. There might have been an incident where the RD cage snapped back as I lost grip of the chain when connected the link. Wrenching on your own bike gets expensive... Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

If you can, borrow a Shimano cassette to swap out with yours. Bet there will be a difference in how they sound. For some
reason the SRAM cassettes are more talkative than their Shimano counter parts. The reason I mentioned your der hanger is that even when new some hangers aren’t quite correct and require a little tuning. If you can check it, it certainly wouldn’t hurt. |

Rear cassette noise / chain
That doesn’t look right. The cage isn’t inline with the cog. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Last edited by many_styles; 07-14-2020 at 01:08 AM. |

There’s a few things I could try before buying a new RD. I’ll put on my old cassette, which I thought was acceptable chain chatter. The rear hanger, I have one on my bike and spare. I’ll compare the both. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

If that picture is the bike in question, the rd cage is not straight. As somebody said, check out the RD alignment just to rule out the hanger because looks like the problem is the cage.

Is the chain, new, old, clean, dirty??

If it's just a case of noise, and the bike shifts acceptably and the chain doesnt skip on any cogs, my vote, if there are new components involved is to just ride it for a few hundred miles and see if it settles down.
sometimes as the housings compress and bed in to their stops, and the chain/cassette wear in even a little, things quiet down. also, there is probably little chance you damaged your RD with a snap back incident, that doesnt sound like anything that should have actually broken the mechanism. |

Check to see if the cassette still wiggles around a little even with the spacer and tight lock ring. That's happened to me, made a jingling sound.

Everything is brand new. I have a spare RD hanger. I’ll see if that fixes things first. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

my first thought was that everything was new...in my experience with shimano cassettes and kmc chains, a new chain is a little noisy the first 100-150 miles. that being said, the pic does give off a cage mis-alignment vibe as others have noted.

This is true. I bet it's just new parts. New chain also? Ride it.

I’ll check the hanger, and then just ride.

I don’t have RD hanger checker, but compared both one taken off my bike (left) and a new hanger (right):
Next to each other, there maybe an oh so slight height difference, but I don’t think the left one is bent. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
