2023 Reach The Beach Oregon

Anyone considering it this year? I haven’t done it in 10 years. Route change this year, Sauvie Island to Astoria. Might try for my out of shape self to suffer through.

Interesting. Many years ago, this route (Scap/Vern hwy to 42 to 242) use to be a regular motorcycle route for me. This would be a fun route.

I'd consider doing it, but I'm already signed up for Cycle O Gravel in the Gorge (same weekend).

You should hit this. Super fun, middle of nowhere, route.

But really, you should do the gravel weekend with me.

I get mixing it up but good grief, they could have started in Forest Grove or something, even Hillsboro.

A flotilla of riders, many with not much group-riding experience, rolling the shoulder of a 55mph road that most people drive 70mph on is a recipe for disaster. I seriously can't believe that is the route.

Just..

Better than the old route on 22 through Grand Ronde. Less miles on Highway 30 than Hood to Coast.

Fair point.

But less-bad doesn't mean good..

I'm very interested in a Portland > Astoria > Portland ride, with an overnight at the Norblad and some Fort George.. then Blue Scorcher in the AM and send it back home. But I'd go through Vernonia from North Plains as the entry into the wilderness.

Banks-Vernonia trail is a much better starting route, except that it’s too narrow for that many riders. Plus the root damage would probably cause many accidents from lack of trail awareness.

I live 6 miles west of Sauvie Island. My plan is to roll out my front door, get on the route, and avoid the crowds. I’ve ridden Hwy 30 many times between Rocky Point and Portland. Not my favorite stretch of pavement, but I’ve never had an issue. Maybe I’m dumb, lucky, or both.

I have too - many many times - and Rocky Point to Scappoose. Guess it just is what it is. Hopefully people stay aware..

Registered for it, now I’m committed. My hip injury from 2 years ago has been a barrier to longer distance rides, I’ve got 3 months to overcome it.
