I like the aesthetic of the Route werks bag itself, but not the aesthetic of having the GPS on the cover. Functionally I would also prefer the GPS on the stem or using a stem cap mount-for viewing, ease of reach, and not having to deal with it when removing the bag during rides for any number of reasons where I would prefer not having the GPS attached.

I ride a small frame bike, so there isn't a lot of exposed seatpost for me. The varia unit gets the seatpost so a bar bag is the best option for me. I would consider a small frame bag, since I don't carry a frame pump (I carry co2 on the road) but I haven't found one that looks like it would work. Most are larger than I would need by quite a bit.

Bar bag which opens and closes easily while riding

Ortlieb Compact 6. The attachment bracket is also compatable with the larger sized Ortlieb bags as well. Waterproof also.

I don't think any of them are going to offer easy access to the contents while you're riding. Route Werks may come close, but it looks like you have to lift the lid ... while riding. As I said earlier, I can get into my Ornot/Rickshaw bag while moving, even with an out front mount. I can retrieve stuff from inside, provided I haven't jammed the bag too full (e.g. if I put my leg and arm warmers in there, it's going to be hard to find my energy gels). The bag's side pockets alleviate that, but not all the handlebar bags have side pockets. I think Apidura's bag is more accessible while moving. One could also consider one of those stem bags if you want easy access while moving (for me, those do hit my knee when I'm out of the saddle, but maybe I should just get over that).

I think that the Route Werks Kickstarter bag doesn’t leave enough room to ride on the flats...I use this little gizmo on both of my bikes and you can add a light to the bar and still fit a Garmin mount.

Here is my solution:

I am using a Barfly mountain bike mount with my handlebar bag.

I have done exactly the same thing with the outer shell bag I just got. Can access the bag very easily and I am also hooking the strap to the barfly. First ride with it tomorrow and I think it will work great.

How about handlebar bag with bells?? Just snagged an outer shell myself and scratching my head about how to be able to use my spurcycle with it. When closed, the flap covers the whole bar. Anybody figure out a good fix?

I have a ruthworks ultralight brevet. Side pockets for phone and clear on top for a map or whatever. Good storage inside. I have since moved the bell to the stem or to spacers depending on the bike. It works pretty well but not as nice as on the bars but it’s a fine trade off for me.

Is anyone aware of a Wahoo mount that includes a GoPro mount under it that is raised/elevated? I'd like to be able to mount my Blackburn headlight under the Roam but in order to provide enough clearance between the headlight and the Burrito bag it needs to be elevated.

I use cross levers on all my non-vintage drop-bar builds, so the only front bags that work for me will be on a rack. So no help with that part of the equation.

What I feel like I don't understand is why the answer isn't simply to use a stem mount. I guess I also don't understand the out-front mounts in general. Tried 'em a couple of times, didn't seem like any kind of improvement on a stem mount, and required an extra clamp-on mount. I can see that space can be tight for stem mounting if you're running a fairly short stem, but otherwise I don't get any advantage from an out-front mount.

What a fantastic solution, Joost (love the front light on there as well).

Would you share the name of that bag?
