Air compressor question...
After pumping up 8 tires this morning (hahaha, 4 of which were only 26"ers), my old-man back is starting to give me some grief. Frankly, this is a recurring problem, and unless I just happen to have absolutely abhorrent technique, I think that pumping just isn't the best thing for my holistic enjoyment of cycling!
So, I'm thinking about getting a little air compressor...I don't need to pump 8 tires up from empty, basically enough to top up 8 tires or so! What is the smallest size that you think (capacity wise) would work for me? Figure I have to pump up 4 bikes' worth of tires at a time. Happy to recharge between events... Quieter is better than loud, I've heard "oiled" are better than "not"? Any input would be greatly appreciated!!! |

About three months ago, I decided not to procrastinate and worry too much about something as simple as this, went ahead and bought a cheap $40 3-Gallon pancake air compressor from Harbor Freight during their parking lot sale. I haven't touch my Joe Blow floor pump since. And the cheap P.O.S? It runs like a champ. Fires up everytime. 1 charge (10 minutes or less) lasts for weeks, pump up at least 1/2 a dozen tires. Zero issue. Why did I wait so long? Why did I agonize over a simple decision such as this?

you sound like an excellent candidate for a dedicated battery powered tire inflator. a few of the big boys are now making them, and they run off the same Li Ion batteries as your cordless drill, etc. simple, quiet and always ready. i'm thinking about getting one myself...

I like pancakes.
I think the pancake compressor might be nice. On the other hand, a new suite of power tools to ensure compatibility might also be nice...

A pancake compressor with a tank is not even the same thing as what Angry linked. They are loud AF and take much longer.
My back is also effed and I have an electric 110v/12v rig I bought over a year ago and I use it in lieu of my Lezyne Overdrive when I feel should. I also have a Bostich pancake compressor (for pneumatic nailers, duh) that I've used to set the beads on tubeless tires, but that's what pushed me to sell my standard floor pump and get the Lezyne with high pressure chamber. Firing up a pancake compressor in the basement at night with kids asleep? Pass. |

California Air Tools compressor ($95 delivered) + Prestaflator ($40)
https://www.amazon.com/California-Ai...dp/B01LYHYHEA/ (check out the video link. yes, it's really that quiet!) http://www.jensonusa.com/Prestacycle...-Head-Standard The compressor is amazingly quiet and 100% adequate for bike and car tires. I've seated tubeless tires with it too.

Just say no to pancake compressors, loud AF as mentioned. California Air Tools is the way to go, period.

They are noisy, not enough 'umph' to seat tubeless, not really enough for my car tires..works for bike tires and nail gun but...

How did you attach the presta head to that? Did you replace the entire hose?
