Jersey zipper repair

I have a handful of jerseys that have broken zippers, and they seem to be some of my favorites. Is it possible to replace the zippers, and where would I go for that? My mom sews, is that an easy repair if I got the correct zipper?

zipper *replacement* is a PITA especially if you want it to look as good as OEM. there are lots of seams and corners and layers and folds that are not easy to get back to original after you've (carefully) removed out the original zipper.

i've done it, but it came with alot of cussing.

a good seamstress/tailor can probably do a nice job, though. plus you can upgrade from an old-school 1/16th zip to a full-zip along the way. ;-)

What is broken? The slider, the piece you pull, or track, the teeth it rides on?

i remember reading an article originally published through Patagonia and their "wear worn" or whatever program. they fix a lot of old kit and promote re-using old gear.

anyway, though a few links from that, i found this:

maybe it can help you?

I've had 1/4 zip jersey zippers replaced with full zip.
It was $20 a pop. The seamstress told me it was more complicated than people think so it wasn't the under $10 per that I was hoping for.

They did a good job tho, and it was cheaper than buying a new full zip jersey.

Take it to a good seamstress. They replace zippers all day long. Worth every penny if a nice jersey.

Posting that your zipper is broken is like posting that your bike isn't shifting... we need more info to help you. There is a good chance that your zippers sliders are worn and can be repaired or replaced easily at home in a few minutes for free or next to nothing. If the tracks are damaged the zippers will have to be replaced if it is practical. Providing us with more info will make it easier to diagnose the problems and might save you some time and money.

Thanks for the suggestions. Most of the problems are that the bottom comes unzipped once it it is zipped to the top. I just bought a really nice, race tight castelli tri jersey and the zipper won't stick at the base. Fixable?

This^ is a good choice if you can't find someone local. The woman across the street from me can fix anything. She is a bit nuts so that's fun too. She still thinks it's funny to call me Charlie Brown.

A typical repair won't remove the original zipper but merely cut off the toothed portion of the existing zipper, leaving the zipper fabric.

Then apply "Fray-Check" liquid to the cut zipper fabric to prevent what else, fraying!

Lastly, sew the new zipper fabric over the remnant of the old zipper. It's a pretty seamless repair, no pun intended, and it's quick.

Yes, you can go through the effort to remove the original but only if you're in jail for a few years and have nothing but time on your hands.

I've taken jerseys to a seamstress / repair person. They have been jerseys I care about so I didn't mind so much the $20 or $30 they charged me. They sourced the zippers and did a really nice job.
