Thinning the herd question

The time has come to thin the herd and prepare to downsize the residence. I sold an old hard tail MB locally last week and its time to move the C40. For those of you who have been selling in the last year or two. Which seems to move easier; frame and fork, or complete bike? Or is it just pricing? It seems to me that a number of bikes listed as complete on PL don't move for a month or more and then get relisted as a frame and the rest parted out. What's your experience?

Locally, completes sell much faster and for a better price.

Online, for an audience like this, parting out tends to sell quicker and for a better price.

Ebay, I haven't noticed any trends one way or another.

Sorry, double-take on your reputation. When are you not in the market?

Until he can start drop shipping stuff to Bend, he is in sell mode.

As to: "When are you not in the market?"

Dan is a Market unto his self...

Good thing the OP has reasonable reason, I was going to report this thread. N- is strictly forbidden in the rules I think.

This is true. The best tactic is to go low on the price and hope for the best.

I've moved frames here and on eBay by simply going very low. Someone is going to get a good deal and it's better than throwing them into a dumpster, which at some point becomes the alternative.

Most used bike stuff, especially specialty stuff, has a very low value on the open market.

The approach really depends on what you're shooting for. Are you looking to maximize the amount that you get for the bike or do you just want to move it on to a new home as quickly as possible? If you want to maximize the $$$, it usually makes more sense to sell the frameset, group, and wheels separately.

Regardless, it definitely helps to price a bit below market (take a look at COMPLETED/SOLD listings on ebay) if you don't want it to sit. Take several good, detailed pictures and provide as much detail as possible in your ad. It also helps to know your market. Are you in an area where your item is in demand or would you do better with a national (or wider) audience?

Fortunately, C40s tend to move well as long as they're priced reasonably.

At some point the going very low becomes more hassle and time than the dumpster actually. Got to box the stuff, ship this stuff, deal with the potential buyers that still want to go even lower. I have a lot of stuff laying around that I should sell but never get to it because of the above.
