Campy for my peg
I have done a bunch of reading in the forums. I have a Peg. It really deserves an italian groupset. The ribble posting elsewhere is serving as motivation. I don't care about weight nor do I particularly care about 11 spd vs 10 spd.
I am not thrilled with the extra tools necessary for PT vs UT, but on the other hand I am kind of a tool hog so what the hell if it comes to that... All that said, I was leaning towards silver athena on purely aesthetic grounds. But Ribble is out of the compact crank I would want 170/50-34. So my options: 1) std crank athena -- not the end of the world 2) silver veloce -- cheaper, crank I want 3) buy from shinybikes which seems to have similar prices and has athena silver with compact crank In my brief surfing around, people do seem to enthuse about Ribble and have occasional issues with Shinybikes -- but not an exhaustive sample. None of the above. Chorus 11 (with Chorus calipers), $1060-ish, shipped from Ribble. A Pegoretti deserves nothing less, imo. Here's mine, full 2013 Chorus (compact) with Record calipers.

May also add if relevant that I picked up a pair of used protons hear awhile back -- it would be my intention to use them as my wheelset. Googling around seems to indicate they work with 11 speed, though I did find an oblique reference to "well known problems with 11 speed... of course not actually stating what those problems are..."

Avoid PT cranks if you can. I have them and I'm dreading the day I need to overhaul my BB or bearings. If you want alloy Athena, search for the UT. I think Velomine has some Athena groups in stock.

You can go the Chorus shifters/Athena parts route. I think that's the best option. The one click-per-shift of Athena is a huge downside imo. It works great, but you miss out on the Campy dump.
But yes, nothing wrong with splurging for full Chorus. Its great stuff. |

Thanks -- originally looked at that route but same problem with no compact crank. Quite a bit more expensive than Ribble also.

Campy for my peg
For me PT has been completely fine. Yes a couple of tools are needed. I'm also one of few that actually prefer Power Shift to Ultra Shift. That said if it didn't have to be silver and I had the budget for it for sure I'd go Chorus. I also think for a compact the four arm looks better than the five arm. The five arm spider has oddly short legs, doesn't look right to me ... there, now you have more of my opinions than you need or want
Also check Merlin Cycles for parts, prices usually similar to Ribble.

Thanks all. I did not realize that one could assemble ones own group on the Ribble site for the same prices. I decided to live with black, kept athena components where I could. As it turned out, the upgrade to a chorus crank was basically a wash given the tools required for PT. I "downgraded" to an Ultegra cassette in order to keep using my Shimano wheels. In a what the hell moment, I went for the chorus shifters -- we'll see if gear dumping is all its cracked up to be. Something to look forward to in the New Year for sure!

Are you kidding? Chorus, at the price Ribble is asking, is definitely the way to go, IMO. Unlike 'ceolwulf' above, the only thing holding me back is the cosmetics of the crankset.
FWIW, awhile back I weighed a Veloce PT crank with BB, ~ 820 gms. For reference, a Chorus carbon UT crank with BB was ~ 715 gms. Something to keep in mind if you want silver alloy; I wouldn't dismiss going with a PT crank. The bike below never complains about being clothed in Chorus (well… Record brakes and ergos).
