1x11 Conversion Questions - Surly Pugsley

So I started a different thread regarding the modification of the 1x9 set-up currently in place on my Pugsley:

https://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=229148

But as I look into it more, I can pick up a used Shimano SLX 11-speed mini group (RD, shifter, 11-42 cassette and chain) for about $100 on Pinkbike, so it seems this would be the way to go. I just ordered a 32t Race Face narrow wide ring, so I think I'm set on the front. I'll continue to use the SRAM X5 double crankset that's on the bike now, and leave the 22t ring in place in case I need to go to it manually if the snow gets too deep.

Just want to confirm that I can essentially replace the RD, cassette, shifter and chain and be good to go. The wheels are Surly Large Marge and the rear hub is a Deore M585 (currently with a 9 speed Shimano cassette). I assume the 11 speed SLX cassette will work on this hub?

Anyone see any issues going this way? I'd essentially end up with a 1X11 set-up with all the gear range I'd need. I need to put new cables on the bike anyway, so swapping the drivetrain at the same time makes sense! I appreciate the input.

Should work just fine. The 11sp SLX cassette will fit on any Shimano 8/9/10 speed freehub body.

Thanks! Just wanted to verify before pulling the trigger!

No problem. Just make sure the chain is sized for both front chainrings.

ooh, good call. I'm sure the 22t inner ring is 9 speed, and I'll need to use an 11 speed chain for everything else. Shouldn't matter though, since I doubt I'll need to manually switch to the 22t ring with a 32-42 gear available.

Sorry, by "sized" i meant chain length. You don't want a chain that is too long for the 22/11 combination - nor do you want a chain too short for 32/42.

YMMV, but I regularly use my 46t big cog on snowy trail rides and that's with a 28t front.

Using an 11 speed chain should be fine for both of your front rings.

Thanks ... maybe I will be using the 22t ring then! And I'm not really sure how to correctly determine the chain length that'll work with a 22/11 and a 32/42 ... any suggestings?
