650B question

Thinking about picking up some 650B wheels for my GT-1 gravel bike. Right now I can only fit 700x38c. If I go down to 650b I can get a 650x42c tire to fit.

Kind of tempted because I could keep my 700c wheels for road and then hit the trails with the 650b

But is 4mm worth it? Will the benefits of 650b just make it way better in trails?

the difference won't be as big as going from 700x40 to 650bx47. Another aspect, other than tire width, is slight lower center of gravity which contributes to a bit more stability on the trails. I can feel it.

I would get a MTB instead. To buy set of 650b that is equivalent to your current wheels you can buy a good used MTB. I am glad I went the MTB route and did not go the 650b wider tire route .

Adding 4mm width; not so sure.

The diameter is going to be about the same as a 700x23.

Using a 650b x 42 I personally feel the rougher the trail gets, the more the wheel just feels undersized in its rolling-over-stuff feel. On sealed roads it does the job though.

A 48 is fine.

Thanks guys,

Pretty much confirmed what I was concerned about.

@joosttx...

MTB definitely the way to go, but I don't have any more room in my small SF apartment for another bike.

You finding you're not riding your gravel bike as much? It collecting dust?

I agree, I’ve used many combinations of wheel sizes and tire widths, and I’d say 650 is only going to be worth it if using 47 and bigger.

I run 650x48s a lot on trails, and they work well on all surfaces short of ‘real’ trails. 650x42 are nice, but I consider them more of a road/gravel setup.

If you keep 700c as a skinnier road tire then I'd say it's worth it, but having two fat tire wheelsets makes less sense. I think a 700x28 + 650x48 is a killer combo.

That was the plan, but I can only fit a 650x42.
