Fully cleaned up and ready for getting back to work. Shop computer needs some love as do a couple of the drawers but I’m otherwise happy with it. Still need some tools to round out my collections of bike and general automotive tools and would love a decent truing stand since I want to start building my own wheels. I use this to maintain two cars, 6 bikes and a house. |

I have two serious problems with my workshop:
1. I have the terrible habit of finishing a job and walking away and/or starting the next one before I clean up and put my tools away. End result: every flat surface is covered and I have to spend hours cleaning up before I’m able to do anything. 2. Bikes generate a huge number of small parts ranging from the tiny (brake pads) to the large (cranks, wheels, forks, ...) I’ve tried mightily to organize everything well enough so I don’t end up with a big box labeled “misc” but still have a ton of crap lying around that I can’t or haven’t organized. I’ll take a picture once I’ve spent the requisite several hours cleaning it up enough that I’m not embarrassed ;-) Greg

My little area of solace carved out the garage. We just moved a few months ago and I had a clean slate since there was nothing in the garage except a utility sink (huge bonus). Added a fridge and built all the 2x4 shelves and workbench/bike area. Just finished up the modified bike/wheel hanging system to get the bikes off the floor. Going to get it setup for winter training by adding a TV and old computer for the trainer. Pretty satisfied with the space so far...

This thread had both inspired me and made me grateful for what I have. The whole room needs a renovation, but this is my home office/bike shop/vinyl and leathercraft/ watch mod do-all room just off the kitchen.

personally, i think it's a whole lot more impressive to learn and see how someone manage and organize their workshop in a limited space. For a good part of my biking life, that's what i had to deal with, the constraints. But that changed 3-4 years when we moved into this house. the house itself is not a whole lot bigger but the genius of it all is the inner "third" sanctum attached to what looks like a normal 2-car garage from the outside. i think it's meant for someone to park his sporty ferrari or antique car but instead i turn it into my biking haven. i like to tell the funny story of how our agent brought us to see the house and being a smart lady that she is, she made us go through the garage first. when i saw what i saw, i immediately declared to my wife and the agent, "i don't need to look at the rest of the house. this is it. tell me where to sign."
pardon me for the size of the photo. i have to take advantage of the panaromic feature of my new iphone in order to accurately portray the size of it. because of the extra dedicated space, i leave it pretty much in perpetual mess and could get away with it. that's why i said earlier, it's more impressive to watch someone maximize and optimize a smaller workspace than it is to see someone who is just simply spoiled and privileged...like moi.

Just moved shops. Massive move ... literally 50 feet behind the old building.
Old space was 2000 sq ft. New space 3800 sq ft. Left to right: C10, Defender, Bronco, F350, Cafe Racer project, frame building.

Uh, how do you guys keep your floors looking so clean? And some of these are in regular rooms in houses, even! Every time I clean my chain I get grease and citrus degreaser all over the floor of my shed. I spread old newspapers underneath my workstand, but I still do a number on the floor itself.
How can anyone do mechanical work involving lubrication without making a mess of the floor? What's wrong with me? |
