I am in the midst of a trial of 8 different coffees in Keurig cups and NOW I understand some of the very negative reviews by coffee pros because some of my samples were pretty bad while other suit me fine. Generally speaking I prefer the dark roasts and now that I have read some of the above comments/reviews I guess that makes sense.

I’ve used a Nespresso for years and am quite happy with it. (NB, I am not a coffee lover in any way - it’s caffeine, dude.)

The issue that I always had was that it limits you to Nespresso pods. But the patents must be expiring because ‘alternative’ pods have been available in Europe for several years and are starting to appear in the States. Most of the major Italian companies offer compatible pod, often at a price that is lower than Nespresso.

start her on fresh ground coffee (electric grinder = cost of keurig machine) with a pourover or a clever dripper

once you are hooked on fresh coffee you can't go back

IMO the pod/capsule machines suit dark roasts better because the dark roast flavor comes through more when the coffee is weak.

Unless you tell the Keurig to make a 6oz cup, then have it make a 2nd 6oz cup with a second pod, you're getting weak coffee, It's like a 30:1 water to coffee ratio or worse.

When we were still using the Keurig, we used a reusable pod and grind the beans using a burr grinder (Barratza Encore.) I would grind a small amount of beans a day or two before and the coffee was good.

This year we upgraded to a Breville Barista Express and we haven't looked back. My wife, who doesn't like complicated steps, said that there is no way we can go back to the Keurig.

if you are not going to go with the keurig pods, then just brew your own.

here's the budget set up:

1) capresso infinity plus grinder

2) bonavita 5 or 8 cup

3) beans from Costco

I do not like the keurig flavors and nespresso isn't strong enough (even at four pods of #10). so, for taste alone, (besides cost/environment) those tow are non-starters
