Gearing might be an issue..as in, enough to get up the hill but not too low when you are on the flats. I had that issue when I went to fixie then SS..it resulted in a similar ride everyday since I was limited in gearing.
Another thought is chain tension..either a Eno type rear hub, a chain tensioner, horizontal dropouts or just lucky to be able to get chain tension right w/o any of the above. I've built a couple of mullet setups..SS freewheel, chain tensioner and a double crank, 2 chainrings, front der...DT or barend shifter...

You want a Hirondelle... two speed, just pedal backwards to climb.

Just a front brake on fixed feels pretty sketchy on **** covered steep lanes. I'm tempted to put a rear brake on mine to help with the fear.

48x18/19 for 72.5"/69"
My Gunnar is a 62cm with a steel fork and 700x32 tires and weighs a hair under 20lbs with cages, fixed+freewheel setup, and heavy pedals. I dig the Quickbeam and Genesis. Nice rigs. |

multiple centuries+ on my fixie-moots.
once you get comfortable riding with one gear, as long as you're not pushing up too high of a grade, it's all about fitness. You're always in the right gear because it's the only gear you have.

Nick, do your bikes have negative saddle setback?

Nice rig! does that have horizontal/track drop outs? Can't tell from the pic. If not, how are you maintaining tension? What gear setup do you have?

I'm not clear what you mean by that? the seatpost above though is an eriksen sweetpost with about 20mm or setback.

But you've got your saddle slammed all the way forward, straight post and more centered seat would look better. |

additionally, i'm unconcerned with how my bicycle looks to strangers on the internet, the fit of this bike is bang on perfect, so i'm not inclined to change a thing

My brain doesn't acknowledge gear inches so initially I thought you were running a huge gear (48T). Calculated my own 42x16/18 (44mm tires) and voilà 73.1"/64.8".

- Horizontal dropouts have the open end of the dropout facing the front of the bike; - Track ends are also horizontal (moreso, actually), but they have the open end of the dropout facing the rear of the bike. Did I get that right? |

Insofar as the distinction has merit you've phrased it very well. [deep breath] Of course, not all track bikes have sliding horizontal dropouts, but some road bikes do, but then again some road going single speeds have rear facing sloped dropouts, and some are forward facing. Some road bikes have rear facing micro dropouts and most road bike dropouts face down, but then there are through axles.
