Talk to me about Moots Compact SL

From Moots in regards to this frameset.

That serial number makes it a frame made before the year 2000, unfortunately we have limited records going back that far. But based off the replaceable hanger & low serial number it is safe to assume it is a Compact or Vamoots, not an SL.

I kept the welding log books in my desk, not sure where they ended up, but that would have answered the question. I agree not an SL.

Mine in an 06 as well. All my bikes are big and the Moots was the first bike I ever had that would not high speed shimmy. I attributed it to the time that the compact sloping TT geometry made the big frame stiffer. I have no idea. I'm more a fan of horizontal tubes now myself. In the end it's just looks and I don't notice it from the saddle

made before the year 2000? gotta call BS on that.have a hard time believing that frame in the photo is that old just going by the details.did Moots even have a compact in Y2k? or replacable hangers? didn't they have downtube cable bosses and not stops?

I was a bit surprised by this response too, since the fork is an Enve 2.0, which was only a available in 1-1/8”, and a pre-2000 frame would have had a 1” steerer.

To huck, looking at the serial number, did you give them 0323 or 9323? It looks as if the first digit after the M is a 9, not a 0.

Wow I definitely gave them a 0 and the picture of the serial number he must have thought the same. I will email them back and tell them the 9. Stay tuned....

With the O it has to be 2006-2007 or nearby and they have the records for that. Someone got confused at the shop. If it was M 300 something that was 1996 or so, I might have welded it back then, and there is limited tracking info from back then.

1 1/8" headsets has been around since the early 90's. Or was Moots slow to catch on with this trend?

Not sure about the early 90’s- I’d say 2000? I know 99 Litespeeds had 1”, 2000 had 1-1/8”.

Doh, I might be thinking mountain bikes specifically. My early/mid 90's Trek mountain bikes had an 1 1/8 aheadset back in the day. I didn't really get into road riding until around 2000ish.

89 GTs already had "oversize" steerers; though not any aheadset.

Moots says it’s a 2009. Which puts it in line to what the owner said.

Sounds about right- some mtbs from that era had 1-1/4” as well.
