Missoula & Bozeman

Next summer our RV travels take us through Missoula and Bozeman. I’m trying to decide which city we should spend more time in. Looking for

Gravel and road biking
Hiking
Flyfishing
And of course a great Farmers Market, which I’m guessing they both have!

I think Missoula gets the nod for FF
The RV Park is nicer in Missoula but not a deciding factor.
I know we have some locals on the board so recommendations please. Long gravel roads are my favorite and yes I can carry bear spray😀.

Bozeman gets lots of points for having Dave Kirk there.

If you're going to check out Chico Hot Springs over the hill, you may as well treat yourself to doing a road bike loop of the Paradise valley while you're there.

Go to Missoula and stay south of town in the Bitterroot valley. Tons of forest roads up some great passes.

Secret fly fishing spots on skalkaho highway which is also a beautiful gravel road climb despite being called a highway...

Also your screen name is MSO - that's Missoula

I have lived in both. I was much more fond of Bozeman than Missoula. 5 minutes north of town is access to great rural roads and a day drip to Yellowstone (and Chico Hot Springs on the way via Paradise Valley) can't be beat.

On a side note, I moved to Austin a few years back. Everyone kept telling me that I needed to go to Barton Springs during the summer. I finally figured out that springs in Texas are cold, in Montana they are warm.

Emigrant Paradise valley

A few of you mentioned the Paradise Valley area. We are spending a week in Emigrant at a nice park right on the Yellowstone River. I’ve done the ride to Chico from Gardiner. Lovdd it, will do again and I’m sure I’ll find some great gravel.

I can highly recommend Island Park , ID for anyone looking for excellent GG, solitude and awesome scenery.

This summer I spent time at my friend's house near the base of Emigrant Peak. If you want to ride while out there, I'd suggest bringing something that can handle hardpacked dirt roads in addition to paved stuff. The riding around there is good but not a ton of route options. My favorite ride took me off 89, on to Mill Creek Road. It transitions to dirt within a few miles, and you continue to ride up the canyon. The scenery is amazing to say the least. If I had stayed there a day longer I'd have hiked up Emigrant for kicks.

If you end up going to Bozeman, I'd recommend the climb up Hyalite reservoir too. Good hiking in that area as well.

This may sound a bit creepy, but, last year I skied Big Sky with a local who lived on the mountain in a condo at the base. He told me that it was a good bet that 5-6 grizzlies were hibernating inbounds at the resort as we skied. He hikes frequently in the summer with his dog out the door, but always with a 45 strapped to his chest. Two bear sightings so far on the trails. So, be aware and be careful.

Yellowstone is just a few miles south, which is pretty cool.

My cousin lived in Bozeman for a few years. Only got out there once but man was it beautiful. Nothing like Big Sky Country. I was able to squeeze in a hike to Hiyalite Peak (sp?). We encountered bear tracks over top of our old tracks on the way down. Never saw them, though we had bear spray. No riding, though it looked promising. This guy is there too: https://www.sklarbikes.com/
Love his bikes!
