The problem with Harbor Freight is that when their products go bad its ALWAYS something major.
I've personally experienced: A chop saw motor catching fire - 1 week old. Vise jaws crack - 3-4 months old. Engine hoist doesn't hold up the engine - 6 months old. I've also witnessed the tabs holding a tool chest drawer break off and a drawer full of tools fall to the ground. That's was pretty effin hilarious. How many times have you had something break and suddenly whatever you're doing is going to take 3x longer? Not saying you should buy SnapOn but you should definitely avoid crap. And never buy anything from Harbor Freight when your life/safety truly depends on it working correctly

This one (Craftsman brand) has lasted 35+ years and many moves, with nary an issue, and hasn't really had an easy life (I've abused it).

I have two rolling stainless boxes I got from Costco. The quality is top shelf and they've held up to years of hard use. I recommend going to your local Costco and looking at what they have. My experience has been very good. dave |

I have a Kobalt (Lowes) 44" topped with a Craftsman 26" that I got last Christmas. They are so similar in construction and color (red) I wouldn't be surprised if they are from the same mfg.. The current HF stuff appears to be of the same quality. I'm perfectly happy with both of mine. The price/quality of all these cabinets is pretty good these days.

Gee. My Montgomery-Ward lower cab is beginning to feel pretty basic! On the other hand, it still works fine.... those old double drawer slides are really smooth and can take a lot of weight.

There are several threads on Garage Journal. You can spend hours and hours if you should so desire. Such as:

If someone was bringing in boxes from 35 years ago on a time machine that would be great. The last Craftsman I bought was so flimsy that I'm glad it was a 3 drawer middle box. I think the Craftsman chests that Lowes is selling now are better, but I haven't looked at them. Even 10 years ago, they were still pretty good. 5 years ago, the bottom had fallen out of the quality.
I got a couple of Husky boxes from Black Friday specials. They were a special edition with more drawers. They didn't have them this year. I guess they figured out people don't care, or rather, the people that care buy a different brand. |

I just a got a cheap one from Home Depot and it's been fine for the amount of use I put it through. It's amazing how expensive those Snap On ones are for example. I don't know how auto mechanics can afford them but I guess they last a life time of abuse.

They pay like $10 a week forever when you add in all the interest. Young mechanics get suckered into those long time plans rather easily I guess. OTOH, there are a fair amount of defaults that go down and the local dealer has to write it off.

young guys are happy to write a check to the snap-on guy for $30/week. don't even realize how much they're actually paying for the box when all is said and done. |
