fat bike winter shoe recommendation
Got a new fat bike and am using flat pedals and want to ride all winter, what shoes do you use with flats that work well and keep your feet warm?

A winter hiker should suffice.
I’m partial to merrell myself. |

Any warmish winter boot with a mostly flat sole work good on flats. Deep out soles with small flat sections not so much in my experience. I ride in a pair of Montrail gortex hikers that work well without extra sock layers down to about 20.

At a sports consignment store I found a pair of Salomon snowshoe racing boots (apparently this is a thing. Fortunately this forum is familiar with niche sports). They look like regular snowboots, are really light, have a nice waffle sole, high cuffs, and are as stiff as my road shoes. Sadly, that pair was too small, but now I’m on the hunt. Plain old Sorels are about as stiff as toilet paper and are nasty for pedaling.

I just use my winter boots (at the moment, Pajar).

I'll plug a different idea (that could work on flat pedals too)
Bontrager Old Man Winter boots + Crank Bros/SPD pedals I just got a pair, and they're fantastic. Was out on the road riding my cross bike in 25 degree weather with just summer socks and my feet stayed warm |

But, there are lots of winter shoes (like the OMW and various 45NRTH models) that are 2-bolt compatible and marketed for fat biking, so what do I know? Most of these boots would also be fine with the cleat cover installed on flats. |

I just bought a pair of Merrell thermo chill’s today w the coupon. I have no reason to clip in here and the single track snow changes overnight w the wind drifting snow. No clue how good they actually are ... look good on paper
