This place has so many cool stories, awesome builders, hella riders. Since 2003 this has encouraged me to keep grinding in my advancing age. Rubber down.

This brings back so many memories from the east coast, we had a group of about 20 riders that modified Rollfast twinbars in the mid 60's to ride the trails

We would remove the fenders, chain guard, coaster brake and bend the bars straight!

I have a whole lot of scars and joint issues from riding with no brakes and the extreme(stupid) jumps we were riding in the Schenectady area!

Im sure some of you can remember the Campbell ave hill trails down to GE, since this is next door to the birthplace of Serotta!

Love hearing this history and now I'm yearning to learn/see more details and pictures.

Thank you!

Highly recommend Charlie’s book, “Fat Tire Flyer,” for the full story and all the pictures. Thanks Charlie.

I probably learned this and forgot it but "Repack" was basically referring to having to rebuild the coaster brake extremely frequently?

I am not old enough to remember any of this either although I feel like my first rigid "mountain bike" from about 1989 certainly wasn't that far off this stuff.

That bike was kind of horrifying to ride on NE trails, even the very easy ones, at least for a kid like me that had no idea I should be riding bigger tires and lower pressures, I didn't even have money for different tires of course!

That bike was stolen in 1995, I would get a huge kick out of riding one again just to see how rough it would seem with all the MTB experience I built up.

It great to have this legendary lore ensconced into writing here! Its a great way to have it on record while also letting the younger fellers read about it.

Cheers,
CJB
