There are two myth's out in the cycling world (press) that continue to baffle me. First, that mechanical Shimano 105 was great. Second, that Campag is about to go under. |

What’s wrong with mechanical 105? I have two bikes with it and it’s functionally essentially identical to the Dura Ace I have on a couple other bikes.

We can agree to disagree here. Mechanical 105 is very good. Looking forward to mechanical 105 12 speed.

Tee Hee. A Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic are 'great' too, aren't they?

Shimano 105 5800 is great.
The new Honda Civic is great also. Take one any day vs a VW Jetta. |

Revenue numbers from Sramano are hard to come by, but between 2017 and 2020 (a far more pedestrian period in terms of growth) SRAM grew 34%. And they can't even work out how to shift a front derailleur! But I know the retort and I hear you, growth isn't necessarily good, just pointing out that 45% growth may in fact be going backwards if the rest of the industry is accelerating much faster. Ultimately on balance of probabilities it seems like I will be able to buy a brand new mech and rim brake groupset in six years time Quote:
I don't know enough about specifics to argue the toss here and my interests are aligned with your belief - so I remain hopeful |

Shimano 105 greatness scale:
1050 was great 1051 was great 1055 was great 1056 was great 5500 was great 5600 was pretty good 5700 was great most of the time 5800 IS great. Don’t get me wrong, I loves me some Tricolor and definitely a bunch of Dura Ace, but 105? That’s the working man’s always-get-it-done, never-fail, shifts-when-ya-press-the-lever stuff. Not elegant, never carbon, low budget. Legendary. |

I was feeling a little restless around lunchtime today and it was barely drizzling out so I pulled out the rain bike and went for an hour spin. Of course that drizzle turned into a full out downpour.
Look at this DEATH TRAP I was riding in the rain today. My short loop includes a punch climb and 45mph descent. Yea yea, rim brakes, friction shifting, 25mm tires - they all still work

My guess is that the 45% was limited by capacity. That number would have been even higher if they could produce more. They sold everything they could make. Not a bad business result.

As for Campy- I got nothing. I wasnt willing to spend the money to find out the magic when I was younger and at this point there just isnt much desire. They keep releasing products so they dont seem like they are about to go under. |

Glad you survived!
I also rode 25mm tires and rim brakes today, but eschewed friction shifting for some nice DA 9100. Being smarter than you, I went out before the rain Working from home without a clock to punch makes for more miles. I got 701 miles in November and only missed three days. I can work when it's dark and I can work when it's raining... I know you have little ones so your schedule no doubt is less flexible! |

And they've been doing that for a long time.
