Looking for a complete bike for my brother (58cm-ish)
Could really use the forum's help on this one. My brother Mike has had a 57cm Bianchi Giro for about 13 years. To make it work, he had to get a stem with a really steep angle to raise the bars a lot.
I asked him to do the Competitive Cyclist Measurement chart and here's what he came back with: Total height: 6' 1/2" (72.5") Inseam: 35" Thigh: 25.5" Lower leg: 23" Trunk: 27" Sternal notch: 59.75" Forearm: 12.5" Total arm: 24" I'm skeptical that his inseam is really 35"...probably not quite... Anyway! I looked at this and thought a 58 would probably do. We're looking to find a complete bike for him under $1500 (including shipping). The closer to 1k we can get the better as his budget is tight. I think the only requirements are that he wants decent components and a fairly relaxed ride... He wants a road bike, but doesn't want too much saddle to bar drop. Doesn't need disc brakes, but a more modern groupset would be preferable (at least 10spd). Would love to see what you think for sizing based on the above measurements and look forward to seeing what bikes you may have that fit the bill. Thank you! Dan |

I'm 6'0", 34" inseam and I generally fit 58's, and like your brother, I don't like a lot of drop either. I could ride a 56 but I like the additional stack of 58's.
Sounds like you're looking for an endurance geo with an alu frame. You can get a Cannondale Synapse with Tiagra for $1400. You can also look at the Trek Domane, though the Tiagra build is over $1500. Both also have Sora options for less. |

Classic - wide gear range - not too much drop. But yeah, an Alum Synapse or Domane would probably be more his speed. That's a tough segment to hunt bikes in these days given suppliers are pretty short. |

I have a 58 cm aluminum Torelli Spada. Has Campagnolo 9 speed now but I could change it to 10 speed if needed. Similar to this but red with a black fork:

Thanks guys -
I think he's looking for something steel or carbon probably. His Bianchi was aluminum and I think he's interested in trying to find something a little smoother. Dan |

Modern aluminum is much more compliant, plus when combined with modern rims and tires, there is no comparison to a late '00s aluminum road bike running 23s at 110psi. Just an FYI.

Guru Racelite
I think I have what you want!
I have a 58 cm Guru Racelite (Altec tubing) that is too big for me. It's currently built-up with a perfectly serviceable Ultegra 6600 groupset and a compact Shimano (I thinks it's an R-700) crank. Wheels are Bontrager Racelites. The bike is a hoot to ride, it's quick and fun without being harsh. It handles exceptionally well and rewards a bigger rider who can put a little more weight over the front wheel than I do. I could definitely do $700 plus shipping. Let me know if you are interested. Saul aka CaptStash.... PS: I sent a PM as well. |

It occurred to me that many sites like to run "best" lists. You could try googling "best endurance bikes under $1500" if you don't like what's been suggested/offered so far. Or you might get lucky with other used sites. I've found two bikes on Pinkbike, including a sweet Cannondale Synapse Hi-mod Red.
I have to say that Focus Cayo looks really nice. If I didn't have my Synapse I'd snag it. |

I don't want to befoul the swimming pool, as it were, but if he's over 6' and doesn't want much bar drop, unless you're talking really sloped top tubes with high stacks, maybe you're better off looking at 59-60cm?
When you're looking at horizontal top tubes, especially, 58cm sounds a little low to me... |

Thanks Geeter -
If he doesn't have a lot of reach, would you recommend a 60 but with a shorter tt? |
