Strange..2 GT going on at the same time..BUT...Froomie not a great first day...LONG comeback(2 years) but I wonder if his winning days are behind him...

Froome did not look good...barely hanging on. Very tough 1st day of Vuelta, he might be able to ride into shape, but doesn’t look ready yet. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I didn't like him when he was on top but this is just sad to watch.
It seems odd to come out swinging with such a selective first stage... they didn't even call it a mountain stage but the GC table is pretty much completely set already. |

He's out the back of the peloton again today, in a group of three, 40 km from the finish. He's looking relaxed about it though. It may be a deliberate strategy for later in the race to help Carapaz. He's not going have deep fitness.

Cyclingnews takes its hits for poor writing/editing, but Barry Ryan's article has this:
"At the finish line, a soigneur draped a jacket over Almeida's shoulders in the manner of Danny Ray throwing a cape over a collapsing James Brown, but the Portuguese rider looked far from spent as he made his way towards the podium to receive the maglia rosa for the fourteenth time. He's not ready to exit the stage just yet." Gave me hope in sports journalists for a brief moment at least! |
