My dark horse is Dan Martin. Closed fast on mountain stage 18 in TDF for 5th. This is his kind of course.

Not a bad pick, seems he's been holding back all season, might come into this fresh and looked to be getting stronger at the tour.

Haha - guess you never played fast pitch softball - mound is only 43 feet away and the pitches come in at 100 mph (not to mention drops and risers etc).

The course ends on Fuji International Speedway?

I think between the heat and humidity all bets are off.

I was at the 2012 road race and positioned just meters away from where Rigoberto Urán "looked the wrong way" when Alexandr Vinokourov went around him. I could literally see their facial expressions making the deal neither claimed was made. The whole crowd around me groaned out loud it was that obvious.

I'll watch this race, as I do others, but make no mistake it's all a show.

Winner from Remco/Lutsenko/Moscon
Outsiders from VlasovMollema or Keldermann/Mader

And Pogacar marked out of the race of course. Hopefully there is a race.

I'll go out on a limb and say Konrad from Austria.
Maybe Juul-Jensen

The crazy thing for me is that the race starts at 11 am (local time), so they will ride through the hottest part of the day, plus the two hardest climbs, Mt. Fuji and Mikuni Pass, face due south so will be scorching hot. Schachmann did well in the heat at Strade Bianche in 2020, can climb and has form. I'll pick him.

I would definitely put Mike Woods up there as a favorite, but I think with the final climb only 6.5km at 10.6%, and Mt. Fuji 14.3 at 6%, it might not be steep enough to drop the bigger guys.

**Edit. Heard more from people on the ground, and it sounds harder than I originally thought. Maybe some of the big guys won't make it, we will have to see though.
