Ian's bike doesn't even have any gears. Imagine doing PBP in 55 hours, especially fixed. Insane.

I agree and i like your bicycle.

I use my traditional style rando for everything. I can see why people doing real organized events might want something faster though.

I've used mine for everything from short rides to touring with a camping load. It's nice to have such versatility without needing to add/remove fenders, fiddle with battery lights and mess with other kludges. She's always ready.

Here's a rando bike. Ian Hands on his cut and coupled fixed Gunnar Streetdog on PBP2019. Must have been outbound since he still looks fresh and doesn't have shermer's neck. After finishing in Charly Miller time (56 hours 40 minutes or faster), Ian took a nap, trained to Mortagne-au-Perche, and rode the last 121km into the finish (for a second time) with myself and a few others all while compensating for shermer's neck. Dude finished PBP twice in one year.

I love my “fake” rando bike ahah but its not a fast bike. I can immediately feel the difference going to my roadie. To me it does not matter though, its a very comfortable bike, the rando bike lets me carry a ton of stuff. It looks nice and its really fun to ride. I will say that I am bot surprised most of the bikes you see at events and the fastest bikes don’t look like a 1962 rene herse.

Good to see that he is not the typical 130lbs very skinny dude, that is impressive albeit a bit crazy

I don’t think I’ve seen a photo of Ian from that PBP. I didn’t know he went full aero with the bars and kit. He even shaved his whiskers!

Not quite as fast or as far as Ian, but here's a shot of me and my Kirk fixed disc at the end of a 60 hour solo flyer on the Santa Cruz Randonneurs 3CR 1000k back in 2014 (I was too scared to go the full 1200k!).

I'd get to meet and ride with Ian and the rest of the awesome and gracious North Carolina randos a few months later in their home state!

Okay, I just looked up Shermer's neck, and who thinks the antidote to "my neck muscles no longer hold my head up from extreme fatigue" is to tie their head in place with some sort of contraption and not say, stop riding??

I had the beginnings of Shermer's neck on PBP and it's not really that unpleasant. Other than you can't hold your head up. First time that's happened on a 1200k, need more core work.

Recumbent riders can get reverse shermer's neck from holding their head off of their seat. Looks weird.

A friend of mine got Schermer’s neck on day 3 of a 1200k. She’s not particularly fast, so was riding lanterne rouge all by herself. She put a toilet paper roll under her chin and rode the last 100k of the day to the overnight. Because she was so pressed for time, she took a 2 hour break, had the volunteers fashion a contraption out of bungees and string connecting her helmet to her hydration pack, and rolled the last 16 hours like that!

Me either. I was looking for a picture once but never found.

Smart setup, just what it takes to do Charly Miller time....I would guess.

Bikes from the VT Six Gaps permanent yesterday. Permanents are brevets so they count, right? Three of these riders completed PBP 2019. At least two on the same bikes, I believe

Marciero, I don't see the VT six gaps permanent on the NE Randonneurs schedule. Who hosted this event? Thank you for posting the pics.
