Mopeds and Ebikes are like water to vinegar. I'm talking about those over the top 160ishmm suspension travel with the hydro brakes, 11speed cassette on the wheel full suspension bikes. They're basically a motocross dirtbike without the motor with one caveat. They have an electric motor instead and it's really not designed to take over you the individual rather it helps you, matches your output. So tough climbs become doable with gusto. They top out at 20mph and if you the rider can get em to go faster than it's all you after that point. These bikes are pretty much the pinnacle of bicycling tech these days and they look fun.

the seven evergreen is super cool.
trying to top a moots rsl is pretty tough. lightweight road bikes: Trek Emonda SL 7, then change to SRAM eTap disc, a little over budget, need Quark powermeter w it Spec S-works Tarmac or Roubaix w eTap and disc are over budget Canyon Ultimate CF SLX disc 9.0 aero w SRAM etap is $500 over, but under 16# you need a carbon fat tire bike, I think: The 3T Stada is over budget. The 3T Exploro is in budget and can go fat or skinny tire. The Moots Route is over budget. YMMV Cheers

For a 50th birthday, Id go in a different route.
Dorian De Rosa's Bixxis has to be one of the best buys out there at the moment. Full custom spirit bike with falz 2 fork, pmp post and headset delivered with a panel paint job to the US for under 3k USD. Plenty left over for a nice campy group and wheels. Might not be lighter than the moots, but a classic bike torched by a legend IMO. Ryun |

If buying new....
I'd get something somewhat unique that you won't see every day on you local rides. My choice would be the Kirk Onesto. You could possibly build this up to be as light as your current bike but you'd probably need to source a lightly used set of light weight wheels under 1400gms to stay under budget.
Second choice would be either a Colnago C60 or the new VR2 from Maestro as mentioned earlier. Both these bikes would meet the lighter weight requirement. If you weren't really concerned about weight then I'd get in que for one of the Zank MXL's. At $4200 for frame & fork you'd have enough cash left over to build it up with Campy Chorus or DA mechanical.
